They certainly will blame Trump, while never acknowledging their own roles in enabling him. Meanwhile (assuming he’s not in prison or dead), Trump will haunt the country on Twitter and in his dwindling, pathetic, untelevised rallies – assuming there are enough sucker cities willing to host them.

I share your concern. Two things:
(1) Mattis and like-minded/respected-in-the-military individuals have made a dramatic series of statements. And there is more to come.
(2) The staying power of the protests and (a) the outrage they reveal with the reactions of security people (b) the feeling of shared perspectives among young protesters. That is enormously important to them.
Even here, on TPM in the Land of Pessimism, folks are making over/unders on resignation.

I was on the Mall for King’s speech in '63. 57 years, hard to believe. And minorities are still having to plead and protest for equal justice and fair treatment by the government. I’m unsure things will change, until the predicted minority status of whites comes about due to demographic shifts. When whites are 30% of the populace we might actually see a difference. So, maybe in one hundred years. Pessimistic? Maybe. But watching the news today, and thinking back 57 years to that day on the Mall, I think I’m more guilty of realism than pessimism. The Caucasian motto is “I’ll cede the power of government, when you pry it away from my cold, dead hands!”

Logic would say that this is a relationship that is not repairable.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) is now one of those people that Trump sees as having hurt / slighted him - and he will now openly seek to destroy her - in every way possible… he will seek revenge at a level that is 10X the pain & insult that he perceives that she caused him …Trump is like an angry brutally abusive spouse - her comments didn’t please him -so he feels justified in beating her into her political death.
Hope Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) fully understands this - hope she comprehends that there is no turning back now… she has vaulted herself into the “kill or be killed” situation. She has permanently “crossed the line” - she cannot “mildly move forward” she either boldly Forges a strong independent path … or she becomes the victim of a hit job.

Wow! Thats surprising. Lotsa Republican money in Wichita.
I particularly liked that the statement is forced to mention that the complaints from the University community were not the only ones—General Mattis and W are also not fans of trump. That seems neither here nor there except that they expect lots of rightwing backlash and are defensively trying to get ahead of it.
