“Virtue signaling” are words I usually hear out of the mouths of people who are mad they’re not allowed to say the n-word. Even if used ironically it comes off about as funny as wearing a MAGA hat ironically.

As you mention it, I love this phrase “not allowed to say the n-word”. It’s fascinating, because of course they are free to use the n-word as much as they please. But it doesn’t please them that they can’t say it without debasing themselves and suffering social disapprobation, or in their terms, cancellation. It’s one of the fundamental bedrock grievances of the Republican base. Cancel culture is among other things a dogwhistle for it.
