He accomplished (indirectly) the defeat of Roe v Wade through his SCOTUS appointments, and that’s enough for the Christo-fascist wing of the GOP. He accomplished big tax cuts for the wealthy, and that’s enough for the donor class. He continues to claim the 2020 election was stollen (sic) and slams Biden and the Dems every day on his social media platform, and that keeps the MAGA base in line. This is all he needs to win the primary, if death or prison don’t get him off the stage before the final votes.

The funny thing about all these “Trump accomplishments” is that they weren’t his. Some of this was just bog standard Republican “wants”, his SC picks were Leonard Leo’s, and the defeat of Roe v Wade was the Christofascists’ dream come true. Trump’s only involvement in all this is to take credit for other people’s years long work. But that’s what Trump does.

Yes, the task is to organize resistance, give it a path. Persuasion is clearly part of that but don’t expect to change minds: less fact-checking and more (re)framing; change behavior, expand tribe, and (some) minds will follow.

Trump is the GOP nominee in 2024, it’s a lock. Only death or an illness that renders him permanently incapacitated will change that. No amount of legal troubles, including convictions or incarceration, will stop the GOP from nominating him. He needs to run to continue his various cash grifts. He surely has hopes being in the midst of the campaign will somehow forestall his antagonists in various legal forums. And he also most certainly thinks winning means he can pardon himself of crimes. And get others to pay him for their pardons.
So, unless he dies or is in a permanent vegetative state it’s Trump versus the Dem nominee. Everyone else is either conducting a vanity campaign or positioning for the VP slot. Those thinking otherwise are deluded.

The idea that anyone, ANYONE, would support putting that criminal back in the Oval Office is inconceivable. Yes, I do know what that word means; I can’t even think about it. I’m pretty sure he’ll never be elected to any office ever again, but I felt that he couldn’t win in 2016, either. In any case, his re-election would pretty much make me leave the country. I like where I am now, so I’m hoping for a couple of criminal convictions, followed by a stroke, apoplexy or a massive myocardial infarction. I can’t stomach the idea of him soiling the Presidency a second time.

I just watched an interview with a member of the Florida legislature who believes DeSantis is the greatest governor in the nation and believes his fight with Disney is great and his recent 6 week abortion law win is equally great. DeSantis has great support from his legislature. Don’t underestimate the idiotcy of the people running Florida. They are nuts.

Our electorate is entirely capable of installing him again. He has the advantages provided by the Electoral College. Ethical, knowledgeable and dedicated election officers nationwide are resigning, being replaced by Trump loyalists, and as we saw with the fake elector scam I’m convinced many of these new officials will be more than willing to put their thumb on the scale when conducting the election at local and state levels. Trump is free to skirt campaign financing laws, as the FEC is toothless, and can’t be bothered with true enforcement of the laws. The populace are idiots, willing dupes falling for every lie a Republican is willing to peddle.
It’s only takes about 42% of the popular vote in the right circumstances to win the Presidency. It’s been done twelve times with less than 48%. Woodrow Wilson won 435 of 531 Electors with 41.8% of the popular vote. Eight Presidents have been elected with 46% or less of the popular vote. If Biden were to face the addition of a left leaning third party candidate in the race, appearing on several state ballots, Trump is a shoe-in.

My son has some friends who are complete and total idiots. He acknowledges this. He does enjoy fact-checking them. One of them has gone from claiming to being a Republican to Libertarian. He cannot tell you what “libertarian” means, of course. Oh, and he’s big on saying that State laws are invalid because they aren’t in the Constitution. Yes, one of those. My son lets him run on and on and then says “Oh, wait, did you vote?” No, I don’t vote! “Then shut the f- up, you don’t vote, you don’t get to complain.” Bu-bu-bu-but…!

I had a strong feeling DeSantis was going to be like Scott Walker in this election and he keeps proving me right. He comes across as another wannabe dictator that has to get revenge at all costs against Disney because they wouldn’t kneel to his demands. Maybe we should call him Ron Quixote from now on given his hopeless obsession with fighting Disney?

The GQP will have to lose again—badly—in order to have a chance of overcoming the Trumpian virus that is killing it.

My working theory of the 2024 electorate – which, by all indications, is shared by pretty much the entire GOP – is that the R’s need to retain Trump’s low-propensity dipshit voters to stand any chance of winning the presidency again. I don’t think the MAGAs are likely to turn out without Trump as the nominee, which takes the bad guys down from the 74 million votes of 2020 to the 63 million votes of 2012 and 2016. So yeah, I do hate to see Trump running away with the nomination.

They’ll likely retain the MAGA voters—but they’ll likely lose the independent voters and marginally sane Republican voters.
So I don’t see a path to a majority, or even enough votes to win with a minority via the EC.

As DeSantis is a vicious little bastard, my guess is that after chopping DeSantis into little bitty bitty bits, Trump will pick him for Veep, use him as a Nixonlike attack dog,
to perform unspeakable acts and be humiliated by Trump as whimsy dictates.
