Before the masses of TPM commenters pile on to Rep. Cuellar for his quotes, stop and think about the following:

  • Is what he said without merit? Even when we are at our most generous in terms of receiving refugees, we as a nation can’t be handling huge surges of displaced people without some orderly way of processing them.
  • If the US were to send the signal that migrants have free passage across the Rio Grande, that exacerbates the burden for our neighbor Mexico, which has become the pass-through nation for everyone in our hemisphere fleeing failed governments.
  • Having the Democratic Party signal in any way that they favor a chaotic refugee acceptance policy where displaced people can enter the US without any form of processing just plays into the worst slander of the Republican Party (which, as you readers may have noticed in the last 5-10 years, has been wildly effective at ginning up votes for their most loathsome candidates).

Remember: the real scandal of the media photos of these encounters isn’t that the Border Patrol agents were on horseback doing their jobs. It’s that they were using whips, and using them against black migrants.

EDIT: Whips were not used by BP agents on horseback. But a picture, and one’s first impression of what it appears to depict, is always worth a thousand words.

To make the defendants have to defend in a rural county where he and his lawyers might have some influence on the judge assigned and might be country club or GOP hack peers. I think the correct spelling when referring to Trump is “scum”. Alternatively you could use “filth” or “human fecal pellet”. In regards not the the filth himself, but to his racist homophobic sexist low-life supporters, aka “shit for brains”, the proper word is “Trumpscum”
