On Monday, President Donald Trump floated publicly releasing video footage of the U.S. Special Operation raid that led to the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Of course Trump wants to release a snuff film, he probably figures that it is just like the movies.
It’s really becoming apparent that Trump didn’t follow this at all, he just got a report and made up the story of how it ended in his mind. And, it’s apparent that he’s looking at the military as a prop to help him win support in 2020…I fear for what he’ll try to get the military to do to get the “rah rah, you can’t be against the president in time of war!” vote, whether it will be raids that kill American soldiers or just a declaration of war against some nation he can kick around. Bad times ahead.
This is supposed to be his distraction from the impeachment inquiry and from his horrible Syrian fuck up. Last night proves to him that the public hasn’t paid enough attention. Releasing the kill is intended to improve his ratings.
Of course this isn’t as big a deal as Bin Laden because Bin Laden was responsible for 9/11 and was the most wanted man on the planet. While Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was a more important figure in the middle east, the American public didn’t know him from Adam. To Americans he was merely Bin Laden’s terrorist successor.
Quick, who were the 3rd and 4th Astronauts to land on the moon? Yep, that is the same problem.
However, the New York Times reported that Trump would not have been able to see what happened in the tunnel through the surveillance feeds in the White House Situation Room, nor would he have gotten an audio feed of the raid in real time.
Just as we all thought. He completely made that up. Whatever PR gains Trump thought he was going to make, it has peaked. It’s already been superseded by the boos at the ballgame, and will be overtaken by Impeachment proceedings and other scandals. There will be no respite from the deluge.
The sustained booing that greeted Trump at the end of the day when he appeared at Nationals Park to watch the World Series underscored how seemingly intractable the partisan divide has become in the capital. Even after one of the greatest triumphs of his presidency, there was no rallying behind this commander in chief.
