A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Wisconsin state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R) told local outlet WISN12 on Tuesday that the ex-president called him within the last week to demand that the GOP leader magically get the 2020 election decertified, which Vos described as “very consistent” of Trump.
Imagine someone assassinated the President on January 6th of any particular year. And two weeks later various concerned parties such as Congress, an IG, the DOJ or DHS, etc sent the Secret Service a letter requesting all the electronic records of agents in the service, with directions to preserve them all. And instead they were all deleted and unrecoverable. Wouldn’t there be mass firings of those responsible for the deletions? Isn’t a violent insurrection that doubles as a failed coup attempt (with multiple deaths) nearly on par with an assassination? Just WTF is it the Secret Service is up to here?
The text exchanges for 24 individuals in the Secret Service are subject to the subpoena. 24. How did they arrive at this list? Where were they assigned? The depositions should make for interesting reading.
There was probably an assigned roster of 24 agents specifically tasked with Presidential security and associated tasks as relates to Trump’s speech on the Ellipse.
Michael Peroutka, the pro-secessionist who once proudly called himself a “true Confederate,” is projected to win the Republican primary for Maryland attorney general against GOP establishment-backed rival Jim Shalleck.
I think it’s fair to say that for the past six years, repugnant maga-backed candidates like peroutka are the actual gop establishment-backed candidates.
This shit needs escalation and the implications of their behavior shown as the violation of oath that it is. These people need to be named, and the agency needs a reorganization so that the violators are removed ASAP. They provide protection to President Biden, FFS. If the bad agents are not true to their oath to the country and their position, they must leave the SS. If they want to provide executive protection for a mob boss, or open doors at a second-rate golf course, let 'em. After prison…
Factions among them, with that old “You can’t handle the truth” good-old-boy kinda condescension.
Might well be that the list of lost emails actually identifies the players in that inner-intrigue.
But there seems to be one sure conclusion; there was a faction of Secret Service willing to make Trump the Constitution they swore to uphold.
Authoritarians have this thing about factions.
They ARE one.
I hope the House has a bill codifying Loving tee’d up; it isn’t just the win-win situation Josh described this morning (we either get interracial marriage protected or a bunch of Republicans on the record as bigots against marriage) - the third win is that it might bring some of this bs home to the Thomases; they can learn which of their Congressional acquaintances think their marriage is an abomination.
ETA: Apparently the Respect for Marriage Act protects both same sex and interracial marriage. So, yay! Let’s see what the Senate does now …
Every elected Republican official declares their fealty to TFG if he is the 2024 nominee. They support anyone who wears their brand no matter how repugnant, ethically and legally compromised, and unpopular their policy positions. So yes, they become the establishment’s choice after winning the primary.
We know significant numbers of the military and various city and state police departments are in league with or sympathetic to the Klan, white supremacists, violent militias and other fringe radical and terrorist groups. There is every reason to believe the Secret Service has similar adherents. And holding those beliefs would mean those agents were more loyal to Trump than they were to either the nation or their mission. There’s very good reason to think this episode was a deliberate coverup of those loyalties.
“You gotta keep his con even after you take his money. He can’t know you took him.” – Henry Gondorff
It would seem Fat Boy is playing the long con, pretending he still believes he lost. He has no other choice. Otherwise he has to admit he was full of shit and pulling a con all along. So he’s still taking the rubes for every penny.
