Trump’s Military Parade Marched Through A Divided Washington

WASHINGTON, DC—President Trump’s big birthday parade was met by protests and scenes in the nation’s capital that showed how split the country has become in his second term. Saturday’s event — which came with an estimated cost of $25 million to $45 million — was mired in controversy before it began, with concerns about tanks…

As a former Army grunt and son of an Army vet, the worst thing to me, among many worst things, about this spectacle was it robbed the Army of its day. Their CIC was the reason turnout was so low. He stole their valor.

This is a dumb headline. “Washington” isn’t divided. The people in the city overwhelmingly hate Trump and ignored his parade. The country isn’t even that divided: trump is at below 40% in popularity.

Instead, a minority of malicious zealots has captured government, and has granted trump a truly unprecedented degree of power. It;s like when the slaveholders, statistically a tiny minority, managed to impose their will on the rest of a disgusted nation. Not surprisingly, the former Confederate states lead the charge

Seems to be the crux of things. Trump supporters may not be as enthusiastic as heretofore but they know what they don’t like and they’ve locked their teeth on it.

Kamala Harris crowds were bigger and more enthusiastic than Trump’s too but it didn’t make enough difference and, while pleased at the No Kings response, it may not indicate the sea change we need to get out of this.

Lord I would love a real sea change – a revulsion and brutal rejection of the Republican party at the polls from top to bottom – but more likely a few percent is what we’ll get, if that; still, I can’t help hoping for more.

“They’ve shut down the entrance,” a woman told a man who found himself at the locked gates to the parade. “You have to walk down to 14th.”

Apparently, the administration can’t find enough competent event planners and ground crew to get a crowd promoting the popularity of Dear Leader admitted to his birthday event.

When will Trump have Military Medals pinned on his sagging chest?
After all he attended a Military Parade that conquered WDC.

Recommend today’s Pod Save America podcast to you, in which they discuss the 3.5% protest rule. Interesting discussion. Bottom line is that if we can keep 3.5% of the population (about 12 million people) actively engaged in protesting Trump at every turn, we have a better than average chance at changing things. This is all based on a scholarly review of successful and failed revolutions and government changes over the past 100 years.

Agreed. I read that headline and thought “c’mon TPM…you can do better.” Slipping into lazy journalism (or at least headline-writing).

Damning portrait of Whiskey Pete.

Money quote:

Pete is playing secretary,” a source says. “He’s not being secretary.” In crisis — an unplanned evacuation, Israel bombing Iran, China moving on Taiwan — there will be no one with experience to lead. “For any sustained operations, we’re screwed. There’s nobody in the SecDef’s office at this point that has any … they’re not heavyweights. They don’t have the sophistication. They don’t have the experience.” One source described a longtime Pentagon employee discussing the lack of readiness in the office, “close to tears,” saying “the department is so fucked.”

The videos of the FF sitting glumly in the reviewing stand while his birthday parade flopped were just beautiful.

The only thing better were the occasional faint smiles Melanomia failed to suppress.

I think 6% of DC voted for Trump. Hardly a divided city.

I visited Fox News web site momentarily this morning (always traumatic!) and I guess it’s no surprise that there was not a single mention about the No Kings rallies.

Not all bad. One year less to his dirt nap.

At my last job, there was a person who had the exact same job I had, just for a different region. He did not have a clue, he was just playing the role. He did so “well” he was hired away by a local hospital to run an extensive quality review program. Everything went well until he was caught doctoring legal documents (patient’s medical records) and was promptly fired. When they cleaned out his office they found drawerfuls of work that he had simply shoved out of sight and then made up reports showing the excellent results of his “reviews”.

He even looked a little bit like Hegseth.

I have words I could use to describe my revulsion when I think of trump but if I posted it all I’d be banned and properly so. Therefore I’ll limit myself to saying…

Donnie, … BLOW IT OUT YER PORTHOLE

i’ll see myself out now.

I agree as well. This is one of the worst stories and headlines I have seen on this great site. Felt like I was reading a People Magazine article where the writer is trying to inject some seriousness into an otherwise superficial, watered down and sensationalized story.
