Trump’s Effort To Designate Antifa ‘A Terrorist Organization’ Too Half-Baked To Analyze | Talking Points Memo

“Too vague to discuss.”

That’s the view of a national security attorney, one of several TPM reached out to about President Trump’s much-discussed but apparently little-thought-out designation of antifa as a terrorist organization.

“occasional conservative bogeyman”

Uhhhh, have you been to Faux News and other right wing sites today? They’re riding the ANTIFA blame-train harder than ever, sure, but it’s not like there’s anything “occasional” about their ANTIFA demagoguery.

I’m worried they can track the monthly Antifa membership dues that I pay with my credit card.

“How could a designation used for foreign organizations apply to a domestic group?”

Pay attention. The claims that “they” are being funded by foreign money are running rampant already. Faux News and Barr will be running with it soon enough.

Vagueness as a feature, not a bug. Because you can only prove that you aren’t antifa with membership in the Republican party or a Christian church congregation, it’s useful for police to threaten suspects with undefined terrorism add-on charges, and for Fox to be able to loudly associate any inidividal with ‘known terrorists’ without basis.

Too half-baked to discuss? Just like everything else Trump does and says.

There is no accountable organization called “Antifa”, online or in real life. In practice, ANYONE ANYWHERE can conceal their identity with a black mask and claim to act in in name of “ANTIFA”. In the recent past, alt-right agitators and undercover police have been spotted at protests disguised as “Black Bloc” instigators, methodically starting fights and vandalizing private property. Just last week, a Minnesota Autozone was vandalized by a suspicious masked man, dressed as a Black Bloc protestor, who was later identified as an undercover cop. He was suspiciously carrying a black umbrella (to help police helicopters keep track of his movements).

Ultimately, Trump’s presidency is on a fast downward spiral and he may not be aware of it yet.

He’s got the COVID19 pandemic, which he has just dropped, now he’s facing protests around the world regarding the brutal and inhuman murder of George Floyd and just today China has declared they WILL NOT buy grains, soybeans or pork from US! Now if that isn’t a PAR, I don’t know what is!

Eat the cake Anna Mae!! EAT THE DAMN CAKE!!!

This is yet another one of those things where Republicans talk in code to their supporters and it isn’t understood by the media.

Ever since Charlottesville, when the word “antifa” first hit their radar, Fox and the other RWNJ outlets have been building up dum dum dummmm ANTIFA!!! as a vast, shadowy, Soros-funded peril to western civilization, like it’s SPECTRE or HYDRA or, more to the point, COBRA from the GI Joe animated show. It’s everywhere. It’s responsible for false flags across the nation intended to make righteous white people look bad. It’s the cause of the riots. It’s the real perpetrator of all right wing violence. It’s the reason your mother has hemorrhoids. It’s the new New Black Panthers.

Are their some treefort clubs of maladjusted types who call themselves “Antifa” who go out, or purport to go out, and get into physical beefs with the far right? Yes. Are their some websites and a loose ideology and shit? Yes. Do they overlap a bit with the borderline personality syndrome Black Bloc punks who work out their anger at mommy and daddy by using use legit demonstrations as a cover for vandalism? Yes. Are there far too many left of center people who cheer them because they can’t see, or don’t mind, the fundamentally authoritarian mindset at work? Yup. Are they an actual organization in any meaningful sense of the word? No.

Yet to listen to the RWNJ’s talk about them on Twitter, they are a vast invisible empire of chaos and anti-MAGA activity. They are the IRA to the Democratic Party’s Sinn Fein, an underground army in existential battle in the shadows against the forces of Q.

And that, of course, makes them a perfect pretext for investigation, arbitrary arrest and, above all the perfect scapegoat for every act of violence committed by the RWNJ military cosplay racist extremists.
