Trump’s DOJ Finds An ‘Ironic’ Hook For Its Pandemic Anti-Lockdown Crusade | Talking Points Memo

President Trump’s Justice Department has found a use for a federal police accountability law its leaders have previously dismissed: going after COVID-19 public health orders.

I“The fact that they’re citing it, they seem to be laying a marker that they could say some of these police departments are systematically discriminating against religious institutions,”

How is it discrimination if they go after all large groups? Is it discrimination if the only large groups meeting are religious groups? This seems like Barr is just pandering to those on the right who like to cry victim.

With any bit of luck, if we all survive, this whole thing has a limited shelf life of about seven or eight months.

The Justice Department argued that because the orders carved out exceptions for other businesses but not for churches, the orders themselves could be a violation of religious rights.

I’m thinking a drive through communion window for Catholics and Episcopalians, and for Protestants, a drive thru “2 minutes sermonic harangue” should even the playing field.

ok, so let the fools gather., closely, in their clubs/churches…just let the rest of us know what clubs they are going to so we can protect ourselves from the members.i really don’r care if they get sick. and maybe die…there are too many of them anyway.

Bunn last week attracted the attention of federal law enforcement agents by posting on Facebook pages that he intended to bring high-powered weapons to Friday’s anti-lockdown protest in Denver, claiming he was organizing a broader armed response. When agents visited him at his home, they discovered he was in possession of a large cache of (highly illegal) homemade pipe bombs—and moreover willingly admitted he intended to use them against any law enforcement officers who attempted to raid his home.

That former Justice official response is what bothers me. It isn’t “weird” what Barr is doing. It’s repulsive, unAmerican, disgusting, unConstitutional, revolting. And more.

There clearly is no god nor heaven nor hell. If there were, people like Barr and Trump and McConnell and DeSantis and Graham and Nunes and McCarthy and a whole slew of GOPPER Thug/Trump Acolytes would all be struck down by leprosy and lightning and a whole slew of nightmares that they have truly earned.

No more judges. If President Obama couldn’t get one Justice even looked at for 11 months before an election, then Trump gets nothing for the next 8 months. If people need to occupy the Capital to do it, or blockade it, then that’s what needs to be done.

It would be discrimination if, for instance, cops were busting up one religion’s services while letting others go on. But that is not happening. What they’re claiming is that it is discrimination to prohibit large gatherings for religious services, while permitting large gatherings for other reasons (hospitals, food production, food shopping). The shuck and jive is the claim that due to the religious protection clause in the constitution, religious gatherings are an essential activity, and that overrides the governor’s sound judgement as to what is essential in a pandemic emergency. They got one trump judge in Kansas to buy it, at least temporarily.

This is most definitely pandering to talibangelicals, and as the article says, they are very unlikely to actually file any suits (which wouldn’t be tried until 2021, at least).

I’ve said for a while now:

I’d rather be in the control group than the experimental group. If the experimental group shows no appreciable change in infection rate, then wonderful.

But so far, the numbers don’t bear that out.

Irony? How about Fucktard McWunderkind, who no doubt cheers on the white nationalist protesters who think stay-at-home orders are the same as Japanese internment camps, suggesting that maybe the gov’t should force-infect selected demographics:

Whatever happened to Barr’s going around the world and gathering evidence against Obama and the Democrats? - or whatever the hell he was supposed to be doing. This guy is a Christian warrior and, like all religious fanatics, he can never be wrong because he has God on his side. Having this guy in charge of “Justice” is like putting Charlie Sheen in charge of the opioid crisis.

Shapiro reminds me of the one Holocaust denier I personally know. The guy isn’t stupid by any means. So it’s not some intellectual deficit; it’s obviously a problem in the emotional realm. You can’t be that wrong and not stupid unless you’re pretty severely maladjusted in terms of empathy, perspective, tolerance, sense of proportion, all that nexus of stuff that helps you not be a total douche most of the time. Most of us manage it! But not all.

“The fact that they’re citing it, they seem to be laying a marker that they could say some of these police departments are systematically discriminating against religious institutions,” said Sasha Samberg-Champion, a former DOJ civil rights attorney.

If “religious institutions” are included in the same order as businesses, schools, sporting events, and other large public and private gatherings, then there is nothing uniquely discriminatory against those religious institutions. Any claim otherwise amounts to a State endorsement and sanction of that religious institution, and the Constitution most definitely forbids such action.

At this point I think you just take the position of “fuck it…let them do it”. They cannot beat COVID. COVID will pick its exit date and until that time you have to deal with it not deny it. Open the economy. Stop the stay at home orders. COVID will dictate the outcome of that and we know what it will be. Apparently Trump and Abbott know and let it slip in the last two days. People will die. Many. That’s COVID’s game plan. It’s COVID’s home filed, COVID’s refs and COVID’s rule book were dealing with here.

So let them do it. It will not be possible to spin the spike in deaths as a good thing. It will be seen as sacrificing lives for money.
