Trump Plan To Host G7 At Own Property Raises ‘Monumental’ Emoluments Issues | Talking Points Memo

The military and Secret Service are already scouting it out.

It’s Trump Doral, the President’s Florida golf course and resort, and from President Trump’s public comments today, it will host next year’s G7 Summit.

I mean, if this isn’t considered a violation of the Emoluments Clause, then just get rid of the damn thing because the law obviously means zip, zilch, nada, nothing.

Seth Tillman, a lecturer at Maynooth University in Ireland who has studied the issue, offered TPM an opposing view which aligned with that of Trump’s, arguing that the framers intended “emoluments” to be limited to “a benefit that extends to holding office” in a foreign state.

“It could be a conniving attempt to extract an unfair benefit, akin to a bribe – and I don’t believe that’s what the foreign emoluments clause is about,” Tillman said.

Professor, I am an American, raised during a time when public schools taught this nation’s history to the nth degree. I can assure you, our Founders had Donald Trump in mind when creating the emoluments clause, as well as foreign money, nobility, etc. End of discussion.

If the past is any indication, he’ll get it seriously considered. “Experts” will express shock and dismay at the idea. Democratic leaders will cry foul. Many citizens will be aghast at the cheekiness of it all. Then it may or may not happen, dependent entirely upon reasons divorced from its propriety or legality.

Maybe he wants to invite Putin to ensure he can get on Aerflot 1 when he leaves

Sadly, just wishful thinking on my part

If tRump’s property raises too many issues, I hear this one’s available:

Has he been impeached yet? No? OK, well, then I guess nothing is different today from yesterday in the world of Trumpidity. I wonder what stupid or offensive thing he’ll suggest tomorrow that will make us all forget what stupid or offensive thing he’s saying today. And the next day, and the next, and the next.

Can anyone even remember which stupid Trumpy things we were lamenting 6 months ago? I’m sure they were doozies, but they all pretty much blur together.

There’s no news in his cravenness or stupidity. There will only be news if they day comes when he’s held accountable. I guess we’re still about 14 months away from anything even approaching such a thing.

Maybe if we click our heels together.

Dear Donald,

It’s been a busy summer. Thank you for reminding me about your conspiring with Russia to attack our country.

I had forgotten that.

Yours truly,
A Voter

They had him in mind when they invented the Electoral College to override the “tyranny of the masses” and one man / one vote. That ain’t working out so well either.

It’s not so much that “people are silent”. Rather these types of stories (of Trump norm-bustin’) evoke more outrage and mouse clicks (like I JUST DID!) and as I have noted earlier, outrage is an Industry, just like any other.

There are currently Town Halls in which people have asked the usual questions about healthcare but have also expressed an abiding interest in holding this Russian Agent accountable.

Crickets on these stories

They just don’t seem to do the trick to get the outrage mojo going…it almost makes counting the numbers of Democratic House members on board with an Impeachment Inquiry seem as boring as watching paint dry.

The GOP hacks in Congress absolutely need to stand up and scold the angry child and say “No Donny! It is absolutely improper to hold the G7 at your resort playground”.

Cowards. EVERY ONE OF THEM.

That would make one fantastic gay dance club and B&B. :notes::bed:

My old High School World History, U.S. History and U.S. Government teachers are turning over in their graves. I can just hear them yelling to us to do something.

Elizabeth Warren was in Seattle yesterday and had a crowd that broke records. She was very well received and stayed for folks to take selfies with her. The line looked hours long. She spoke with passion about this country and its future. Crickets.

It used to be challenging to keep track of all the important news of the day. Now it’s challenging just to keep up with all of TrumPP’s scandals of the day.

Corruption, chaos, and cruelty are hallmarks of the Trump Administration. This is some of the corruption.
