The Trump Organization entered into an agreement with a Scottish airport in 2014 to increase traffic to his Turnberry golf resort, The New York Times reported.
"But…we’re giving the AF crews deals on our greens fees. "
I really think the biggest part of this story is the redirection of refueling to keep this airport open since it was going under and without it, Turncoat would in turn go under. The room bookings were just gravy.
Both the Times and Politico’s reports come in contrast with President Trump’s denials that he was involved in any decision to house the military personnel at his resort.
We knew it was a lie because Trump was denying it.
“From 2015 to 2019, they said, Air Mobility Command aircraft stopped at the civil airport 936 times. Of those, crews stayed overnight in the area 659 times. The service has not said how many of those overnight stays were at Turnberry.”
Multiple reports indicate the military’s practice of patronizing this airport predates Trump’s term in the Oval Office. However, this aspect is consistently elided as a point of emphasis, with the media preferring to focus on the admittedly suspicious relationship it may all have to Trump. Progressive and left leaning reporting would do itself a favor in dissecting the genesis of all this, even if it entails questioning the military’s role during the Obama administration.
At this point it always seems ridiculous to me when being fair requires you to believe it’s not certain that Trump is taking corrupt advantage of a relationship. You really have to assume he does that every chance he gets. If he can take public money and use it to prop up one of his shitty failing businesses, he will. No compunction about that ever, he does it as mindlessly as a shark, with no regard for law, ethics, or appearances. It’s why he made that absurd literal show of divesting-not-divesting himself from his businesses. In every situation like this where there’s a conflict of interest, if he could take advantage, he certainly did.
Both the Times and Politico’s reports come in contrast with President Trump’s denials that he was involved in any decision to house the military personnel at his resort.
So, were people in the military prescient enough to know in 2015, when this allegedly started, that patronizing Prestwick would curry favor with a future President Trump? Or they were just covering their bases, in case he won?
Snark aside, the fact this practice predates Trump’s term merits scrutinizing it in a more expansive light than “This is all being done to benefit Trump, and worse it’s being done at his behest”.
The number of overnight stays had almost tripled since he took office. Someone at the pentagon or the white house would have said these are horrible optics. Of course a normal president would have divested and this would not have been as big of an issue.
Rachel said it last night as she went down the list of yesterdays scandals.
In times gone by, any one of the scandals would have have thrown the country into turmoil and have been headline news for weeks
The president drawing on a map of Hurricane Dorian predictions to make it look like the storm threatened Alabama, as he incorrectly said. The situation deepened on Friday when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a statement backing Trump against the opinions of its own experts, a discrepancy its chief scientist has vowed to investigate.
There is nothing wrong with the Air Force having deals with civilian airports, particularly under-utilized civilian airports, for refueling stops. That’s been going on since the Cold War. Ditto crew being put up in civilian hotels. But back before we entered this hellish timeline, it would have been impermissible for any elected official to profit off the deal, particularly when it meant sending them to more expensive and distant digs. This would have been what people considered a huge scandal back when we were a more or less functioning liberal democracy.
Sure, question the uptick in frequency, and the reason for it. But my question is, why did this practice START in the first place? Someone in the military, or the civilian command of the DoD, had the idea to do this BEFORE Trump was elected. What was the original reason for it? To benefit Trump? In 2015? Really?
There was clearly a pre-Trump military relationship with the airport. However, an ethical and non-corrupt President would have told the airport to NOT send people to his nearby resort after taking office, even if it was just to avoid the appearance of corruption. The fact that Trump did the opposite and the military dutifully complied is just another bullet point to add to the Articles of Impeachment.
Before Trump was elected he made it known he was not going to relinquish decision making in his businesses. He made it known he was not releasing his taxes. He was candid in telling everyone as far as he was concerned people could keep their damned hands out of his personal affairs, and if they didn’t like the possibility they would result in conflicts of interest and enrichment on his part it was too damned bad and they could go to hell.
And knowing all that, and having been forewarned, the citizenry nevertheless elected him.
So now the citizenry deserves accountability? Seems to me the citizenry said, in a Democratic fashion, they were OK with Trump’s corruption.
TRUMP TOLD US ALL AHEAD OF TIME THIS IS HOW IT WAS GOING TO BE.
