President Donald Trump, who is selling plastic straws emblazoned with his name as part of his reelection merchandise, sees the items as just the tip of the plastic iceberg.
“So you have a little straw, but what about the plates, the wrappers and everything else that are much bigger and they’re made of the same material? So the straws are interesting, everybody focuses on the straws, but there’s a lot of other things to focus on…It’s an interesting question.”
Curly: “I keep tryin’ to think, but nothin’ happens!”
Trump has said a fairly bewildering slew of things on the issue, recently telling ITV’s Piers Morgan that climate change “changes both ways.”
Alexander Pope:
A little learning is a dangerous thing; Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring: There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain, And drinking largely sobers us again.
Good thing he didn’t put this in a tweet. Because I’m sure he would have both capitalized and misspelled the word “straw” and looked even dumber than he normally does.
Golf tees and hats and gew-gaws,
Mugs, hamburder wrappers and straws.
He adds yet more plastic
And tweets things so drastic
They break all of society’s laws.
That being said, his campaign straws are being merchandized as an alternative because “liberal paper straws don’t work.”
I’m old enough to remember when paper straws were the only kind around, and they worked just fine. Just don’t try to re-use them, but the plastic ones don’t tend to get re-used anyway.
