Trump Official Who Tricked Participants In RNC Video Dealt Penalty For Hatch Act Violation | Talking Points Memo

Lynne Patton — a former event planner for the Trump family who was then appointed to a top role at the Department of Housing and Urban Development — was slapped with a $1,000 fine and a 48-month ban from federal employment for her involvement in producing a video that aired at last summer’s Republican National Convention.

Considering she got a $1400 government check recently, she’s $400 ahead. So much for the Hatchet Act.

Shoring up and strengthening the Hatch Act is one of the many post Trump reforms that needs to be made. So much work, so little time.

This is a slap on the wrist but the reality is that Patton will never again work for the federal government.

There must be a very long conga line for Trump family members who have violated the Hatch Act.

These people never met an ethics rule or LAW that they did not think pertained to THEM.

They ‘have’ to show the glories of Trump.

Is there anything more toothless than the Hatch Act?

It could be improved slightly if the fine were updated to reflect 80 years of inflation.
And, if the bar from government service were extended to a more meaningful time.

EXACTLY!

All the constant violations by Sec of State, WH Counselor, etc etc etc, and this is the only one held accountable under the Act. She certainly deserved it, but more or less than the others?!? NOT a good look.

I would’ve thought Kelly Ann, who all but demanded sanction, would’ve moved to the head of the line.

I’ll watch for monkeys flying out of my butt.

define “weird”?

This is something that has always bugged me. Congress always writes laws that specify dollar amounts, which is OK if the law only applies for a few years. Remember the Alternative Minimum income tax? Had to keep amending the law when it started to hit on middle class people. It would be so easy to create a a unit that simply took the total earnings of every person in the country from the previous year, divide that by the number of people, and divide that by 365. Penalty shall be 300 “Person-days” or what ever.

@esthers_girl - I think ‘weird’ is certainly applicable. I find it a huge slap in the face to the whole country…whether she is black or not…that a bit player gets prosecuted when there were whole departments, divisions, arms of our government that put on a never ending campaign for Chump. Not to mention his family, advisors, and the whole executive branch that violated the Hatch Act every day and flaunted it. This better be only the beginning.

“I’m already on it.”

Seems like low-hanging fruit, considering that basically not a day went by when Trump administration officials didn’t flagrantly violate the Hatch Act in some way.

$1000 fine is much too low. At least ten times that amount might be more
of a deterrent.
