How about we dial back the rhetoric of “even if it means we all die of COVID” shall we? The curve is bending in America despite everything that Trump does to fuck that up. Most of the governors and cities are taking the right steps. The number of new cases and deaths per day isn’t increasing now. Panicking doesn’t help anything, nor is a back up by science.

Given China was trying to get the WHO to declare an global emergency by January 27 because people without symptoms were spreading the disease, but the US CDC was pushing back saying there was no evidence for it, maybe China should be the big funder and driver of the WHO. Clearly China’s response was problematic, but it wasn’t nearly as problematic as the US’s. It seems foolhardy and reckless to hold sway over global decisions with our current leadership.

Donald Trump will be making another “perfect” phone call to the head of WHO. I certainly don’t want to cut our support for WHO at a time like this. If you could do me just a small favor. Just announce on CNN that nobody could have done better than me in responding the COVID. It’s small favor between friends. You want to be friends, don’t you?

This is standard Trump MO. When the daily news cycle is unfavorable announce something really outrageous to seize control and distract the media and to keep various factions off balance. His people (Giuliani?) no doubt are contacting WHO to dictate ‘perfect’ terms for not cutting funding. He will deny he considered doing what he said he literally said just a day, a week, a few minutes before even though he will add “but a lot of smart people were saying ‘sir, you should to do that.’”

Cut WHO funding and China will happily step in to replace it, along with any influence we had. 500 million a year is dirt cheap – just look at how much we are spending now because we didn’t listen to them.
