President Donald Trump has invited Michigan’s top Republican lawmakers to the White House on Friday as he furiously works to steal President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the battleground state, according to multiple reports.
Shirkey told Bridge Michigan earlier this week that a scenario in which Republicans overrule the will of the voters by handing the state to Trump is “not going to happen.”
“We are going to follow the law and follow the process,” he said.
So when ‘the process’ involves partisan hacks on the state canvassing board refusing to certify the vote, where does that lead us?
Luckily, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin have Democratic governors. At worst, the Republican legislators and governors will send competing slates of electors. If that happens, current law says that the governors’ electors take precedence.
This three-party exchange on another thread kind of opened a window of understanding for me. I believe this is the entire strategy at this point, and why those two MI legislators are going to DC:
Perhaps the Michigan AG can empanel a grand jury and indict them and Trump for conspiracy to tamper with an election. Time for Dems to take off the gloves and put on mailed gauntlets.
It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if the GOP legislature decides to sue the Dem governor over this just as they have any public health mandates the governor has put forth. The WI SC will be more than happy to turn it over to the legislature.
Nothing the voters of the State can do about it. That’s what makes this strategy so awful - we’ve spoken; we’ve made our votes count; this guy can write it off and no one can stop him.
The election laws are clear in all the states, and a set of electors nominated by the legislatures is in no way a legal slate for the Electoral College. That’s not going to stop Republicans from making the attempt, but it should be laughed out of the room as the nonsense that it is.
It’s dangerous though, Republicans are playing with the foundations of our democracy in their effort to win the presidency…if they succeed then all bets are off and things get far worse. We’ll need to watch closely to see if the Michigan politicians change their tune, and see what they were promised to do so, to see if we will get to keep our republic.
