Why can’t the world just stick with the Sharks and the Jets?
Pretty sure it was Hogg whom microphone-wielding MTG was stalking in the infamous video - then, he seemed like the very model of self-restraint; I probably would have snapped.
But: “defund the police” is not going to be a sturdy platform plank. Wisconsin GOP was able to taint Mandela Barnes with it (I’d say unfairly so, but politics ain’t beanbag) with the result that RoJo got six more years. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson fared better but had to do some contortions to Explain What He Really Meant in a recorded statement that got a fair amount of airtime here.
If the party is going to have an internal debate on this issue, best to get it over with soon, and quickly.
There’ll be a place for McKinley of course. And righting an historic wrong, the Jefferson Davis Room.
Democrats need to be able to confront the loudest toxic activists on ‘the left’ publicly, so the public can hear the Dem positions and policies. They can do their best to work with these folks and avoid the nastiest outcomes…but the public HAS to hear the Dem positions and the rationale that Dems will do what is best for the avg. citizen, the MAJORITY of voters, in every case.
Otherwise, the Dems have no public policy (that the public is aware of) and the loudest, most toxic activists are the only thing the public hears. I have been saying for a long time…basically since the advent of social media which gives a megaphone to our loudest Dem fringe voters…that they need to take back and own the microphone. That doesn’t mean silencing anyone…but they cannot sit and let the social justice warriors (SJW) monopolize the microphone.
We already have a ton of problems with communicating and messaging…but much of it is the Dem party has NONE. Except in campaign speeches and floor debates on CSPAN, we have no mechanism for pounding out to the public what we REALLY stand for. The loudest SJW get much of the press and Mass Media’s excesses and shortcomings get stapled onto us…and that is what the public thinks we stand for. If we cannot be forceful, simple, and repetitive about what Dems stand for as a party…it will be crafted for us by the SJW, Media, and RW.
Officer Krupke, you’re really a square.
Sorta depends on who the “social justice warrior” is. I like the time-tested ones - see, e.g., Cong. John Lewis.
Like the fall of 2024. Like a big reason why we lost.
Hogg is catnip for the Republican Party, a gift. He is not in the least representative of the Democratic Party as a whole.
Evidence that he is a gang member, evidence that he is violent, and as the press secretary claimed yesterday -a human trafficker.
evidence?
BONDI: We have the transcripts from the court hearings
Barnes cozied up to the Defund the police movement, alright - all while paying a private security detail for himself. Merely Googling “Mandala Barnes defund the police” yields a treasure-trove of Barnes’ stupidity. What were Wisconsin Democrats thinking?
When you’re explaining, you’re losing. By the way, how have Chicago school children’s achievement been fairing since the radical element of the Chicago Teachers Union took power? Care to take a guess?
From your keyboards to God’s ears.
C’mon, he’s a foreign born, brown guy on the East Coast. He MUST be a New York MS-13 gang member. Even though he’s nowhere near New York.
Where I live, every black kid that gets into trouble MUST be a member of a Chicago gang. Even if he hasn’t been east of the Mississippi River.
I have no problem with folks being social justice warriors, but in the parlance of the kids in the internet age it means Loudest Mouths Online and that they have an outsized presence and effect on silencing and canceling people…often with ever-changing demands. I truly am sympathetic with many of their causes/concerns and the root injustice that activates them. However, the rise of social media on OUR side of the digital landscape means the message and messaging has been co-opted…out of the Dem hands. The RW has decided advantages, now, with how the internet serves/helps them. The Dems peaked about 2008 with social media helping us, but it has hurt us FAR more than it helped since then. Meanwhile, the RW caught up and the internet has served their perverse interests much better.
David Hogg is no John Lewis.
You’re right, but why Democrats can’t figure out the basics is discouraging. I watched former NYC Police Commissioner Bill Bratton in a CNN interview about 5 years ago. Of course ‘defunding’ the police was the first question. Bratton, who made the cover of Time magazine when he was commissioner, was too famous for his own good. And too famous for Rudy, who sent him to Los Angeles.
Bratton responded with something like, it’s not about defunding the police, it never was, it’s simply reallocating the police budget monies, which we do every year, deciding to either add more 911 operators, more technology for faster response times, or adding more police to our terrorist teams, or investing more monies in neighborhood watch programs, which BTW have helped reduce crime. Police departments use their limited resources in the most effective way to protect the public. Politicians sometimes muddy the water for their own gain. No one believes in defunding the police.
Took about 45 seconds. It was a beautiful thing. Bratton handed Democrats the answer how not to get punched in the face in every contested election, how to deflect and make normal a “simple misunderstanding.” Moving on …
Don’t remember Democrats response. What Bratton said simply disappeared into the vapors.
I remember saying some crazy sh*t when I was 25. I’ll be glad to check in on what he’s saying maybe 15-20 years from now (any more than that and there’s a fair chance I’ll be gone).
Bratton’s roll-out needs to be compressed a bit, with heavy emphasis on that “no one believes” sentence, for this to work as the prevailing narrative. Of course, it won’t work with the Ingrahams and Bartiromos - given that members of the current administration seem to understand that they can appear on their shows and lie without fear of being called out, I really don’t know what to do about Fox News.
Wingnut fantasies are endless…
Yes, & notice Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, as well.
I’m still waiting for someone to invent some sort of “permanent foundation” plastic surgery that promises to smooth the skin forever, etc., so we can see what fun horrors it produces.
I’m guessing you were absent in 1987 when Reagan’s FCC abolished the Fairness Doctrine. There is nothing left to “enforce.” It would most certainly put platforms like Newsmax and Alex Jones out of business and put a giant hole through Fox “news” as well.
