House Republicans have noticeably shifted their messaging in recent days to attempt to shield President Trump from a swelling body of evidence against him by subtly suggesting that key deputies involved in the Ukraine saga may have acted on their own.
Right on schedule, “I barely knew these guys.” Good luck with that.
Rudy has the receipts, Donnie. I bet Lev and Igor do too, because they’re experienced mobsters. And take it from anyone in Texas, Rick Perry isn’t strong or smart enough to stand up to pressure. Not to mention your own phone call with Zelinsky.
This really shifts things towards a resignation track. Once GOPers are forced to admit that something illegal happened here and someone on the GOP/Trump side needs to take the blame, you’ve pretty much made the leader either look guilty or impotent/incompetent. Neither is a winning message.
Every day, the GOP throws more spaghetti on the wall to see what sticks, only to have the lie undercut within two days. Sometimes even by Trump or a close staffer.
Won’t work. Won 't fly. Remember when Chris Chritie tried that angle “I didn’t know shit about that bridge” and it flopped? Same here. To suggest that a man living with his face buried in Trump’s ass, Rudy that is, was engineering a ploy with a sole purpose to benefit Trump politically but kept it on the hush is insultingly stupid.
And just when you thought you had bought enough popcorn, the drama escalates.
I thought they would settle on “Of course it was normal diplomatic pressure, and just aimed at overseas corruption in general, not specifically about Biden.” But this is better. The Mob-style attempt to build a firewall around the Don and set up the lieutenants for taking the hit, will be much more fun to watch.
Whether intentional or not, Trump has latched onto the shadow denigration campaign
We know damn well its intentional , Dump would throw Barren under the bus to save his ass.
GOP you made that so enjoy
Let’s keep in mind that a lot of this UKR stuff was motivated by GOP/WH H2H internal polling between Biden and Trump. If Biden does happen to make it out of the primary and the party consolidates behind him (which they will) then it’s a very fair argument to raise whether someone like Romney, Kasich, Haley or someone more conservative like Cotton, Cruz would be a better matchup v Biden than would Trump.
The election results from the other day are motivating these changes by the GOP. They’re reaching the conclusion that simple denial isn’t helping them at the ballot box. It pisses off and motivates Dems and Indies to vote Dem and it isn’t getting the GOP to be able to max out in rural counties.
