The Justice Department under President Donald Trump secretly obtained the phone records of three Washington Post reporters over reporting they did in the early months of the Trump administration, the Washington Post reported on Friday night.
It’s almost guaranteed that there are many, many other abuses of power that happened during the Trump administration like this…Trump, like Nixon, has an enemies list (which is probably a lot longer), and he and his team were completely happy to go after anyone who opposed them or brought out the truth of what was really going on. The only saving grace really was the civil service, who followed the rules instead of kowtowing to the politicians. That’s why Trump signed an executive order that would have allowed him to fire a huge number of civil servants and replace them with toadies…if a Republican wins the presidency again you can bet that will happen quickly.
We really are headed towards a clash between the forces of the Republican party which want to turn America into a dictatorship they rule and the rest of us. It’s clear which side is more in agreement with the principles that founded this nation and ran it for 230+ years now, but it’s not at all clear how the confrontation will turn out…we can only hope that enough people believe in things like the Constitution to want to retain it for our descendants.
The speculation @emptywheel was that it was (1) John Durham who sought the contacts and (2) that they were looking for FBI contacts, like Peter Strozk and, I’d add, Andy McCabe.
For me, that’s probably so Donnie could proclaim, “…and he’s a leaker…” The character assassination just never stopped in that corner.
The bracketed below is an excerpt of a post of mine from another thread
["the System of Justice we have in the U.S. is slow and deliberate.
And here is the most frustrating part:
It can be slow and deliberate and be corrupt and worthless (in the hands of the corrupt)
It can be slow and deliberate and deliver the Goods
And until the Goods are delivered no one outside of the system may have the faintest idea which is which ."]
Let’s imagine two extremes… on one side Trump is never charged or, if charged, walks on everything…on the other, Trump is dealt with for his crimes as he would without the kid glove treatment made worse by being POTUS.
No one knows what will take place in the future w/r/t Trump’s situation. And that provides an extraordinary amount of doubt and uncertainty for us and a Golden Opportunity for the GOP to talk and act precisely the way they have been doing from Minute One after Biden was announced as Winner on Saturday, 7 November 2020.
And Barr is perhaps the worst human being ever installed as Attorney General. Though I suspect he’s guilty of many crimes (so far unproven) during his tenure, it’s crystal clear he committed perjury in his testimony to Congress. He should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
