On Thursday, Trump made a veiled threat toward the state of New York, home of multiple lawsuits against him, ahead of his meeting with New York governor Andrew Cuomo (D) to discuss the Department of Homeland Security’s freeze on its “Trusted Travelers” programs for New Yorkers. The freeze was enacted last week in response to New York’s new law that allows undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and prevents ICE and CBP from accessing New York’s DMV records.
Until then, we have a duty and responsibility to defend the Constitution and the rule of law,” she wrote. “BTW, I file the lawsuits, not the Governor.”
Attorney General William P. Barr pushed back hard Thursday against President Trump’s criticism of the Justice Department, saying, “I’m not going to be bullied or influenced by anybody.”
In an interview with ABC News, Barr said the president’s highly critical tweets aimed at the department “make it impossible for me to do my job.”
Barr said he was prepared to accept the consequences of speaking out against the president.
“I cannot do my job here at the department with a constant background commentary that undercuts me,” the attorney general said.
Barr is reminding trump who’s really in charge. And he’s pretending to not be fully bought and paid for, to mug for the cameras. (But really, he doesn’t need to be bullied. He’s in the tank for trump because he wants to be.)
