President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that it wasn’t his idea for Vice President Mike Pence to stay at his golf resort during a state visit to Ireland this week.
I beg to differ. To me, you suggest an ignorant, uninformed, incompetent, illiterate, narcissistic buffoon. You also suggest a corrupt, criminally-inclined, child-like, demented fucking moron.
Amazing how they start changing the story when the lawyers remind them that this violates a number of Federal Statutes…
For example, if he stays voluntarily at a far-away place (due to family connections), all to-from travel from the business location can’t be paid by the government, but must be at his own expense…
Whenever Trump is gone, this stuff needs to be investigated thoroughly, the American people need to know how the administration did things like this and how much it gave to Trump and his family. And then laws need to be passed to make it illegal for a president to remain invested in whatever business interests they hold when they get elected. In the past, we had men who obeyed the moral calling to remove themselves as best they could from conflicts of interest like this, but now it’s obvious we can’t depend on electing a president with the moral character required, and we have to change the laws accordingly.
Saudi lobbyists spent $270,000 last year [2017] to reserve rooms at Trump’s hotel in Washington. Just this year, Trump’s hotels in New York and Chicago reported significant upticks in bookings from Saudi visitors.
Ain’t gonna happen. This is such a black-and-white violation of Federal law regarding reimbursement for travel by employees (even ignoring the enriching Trump bit), that’s why the very rapid walk-back.
But this one is more fun. Ignore Trump for a moment.
Pence has stated that he’s doing it voluntarily, because he wants to be near family.
Under Federal Law, he can’t seek reimbursement for the travel between Doonberg and Dublin, as there are accommodations closer to the venue.
Obviously, they’re going to break that, but that means a whole bunch of people are going to be committing Federal crimes-- the people seeking reimbursement, the people who have to sign off on that reimbursement…
And the Statute of Limitations won’t run out for these folks by the time a new administration is in place, so by doing this, they’re all putting themselves at risk.
