President Donald Trump reportedly went rogue on Monday when he threatened to pull the Republican National Convention out of its planned venue in Charlotte, North Carolina if the state’s governor did not roll back the restrictions of his stay-at-home order that would hamper full attendance at the convention in August.
Anyone who ever worked for him is familiar with these prima-donna tantrums, certainly. And it would be amusing and we’d get a chuckle out of his people’s discomfiture if he hadn’t done the same thing with the coronavirus response, done nothing out of an agony of indecision and a delusional belief that the most important thing is to pretend everything’s normal. He’s killed 100,000 of us that way. So it’s less amusing than it might, alas, have been.
Trump’s call to pull the RNC from Charlotte was one of his distractions from the number of dead Coronavirus victims exceeding 100,000. Ditto Trump’s ugly and false attacks on Joe Scarborough.
I call bullshit that Mark Meadows and any other GOP convention planners were surprised at Trump’s tantrum.
Anyone who knows Trump could predict that he’ll insist on every seat filled, with nobody wearing masks at his GOP coronation ceremony. Obviously Cooper can’t guarantee that, at this point. Meadows was just buying time, knowing this storm was fast approaching on the horizon.
As with most things that come out of our Sociopath-In-Chief’s mouth, it’s total BS. My guess is that they’ve been putting this convention together for 6 months+++. Scrapping everything and trying to pull it together in a coherent manner in a new venue in 2 months will be all but impossible. I’m hoping that the governor of NC realizes that it’s a transparent ploy to get him to ignore every healthcare safety standard and create a new crisis. Governor…call his bluff!
Aaaaaand the Times is reporting that Trump wants all the troops in Afghanistan home by—anyone? Jeeze, so many hands. OK, in the back, that’s it, surprise surprise it’s Election Day! Home by Election Day. For some reason. As predictable as worms on the sidewalk after a hard rain.
Roy Cooper just held a press conference and they asked him about Trump’s comments about the convention. He did not mention Trump but said that he was not surprised by anything he sees on Twitter. He is pretty good at dissing Trump without going at him directly, which will bring Trump down on him and NC and probably impact federal aid.
O/T There were two car races in NC this week. One was a NASCAR event where the public was not admitted and they followed the guidelines to protect the drivers and support teams. The other race was a real redneck event where they had more attendees than normal with crowded lines, stands, etc. They defended it as an expression of their freedoms. I looked at the pictures – lots of obese middle aged and older people. I feel sorry for the hospitals in that area, they are going to get slammed in a couple of weeks. I don’t get car racing in general, especially oval track racing, but NASCAR at least tried to prevent an outbreak. This other track needs to be shut down for the duration.
But what’s the food situation? Make mine Charleston. Three weeks of that low-country cooking? Even if you died it would make a hell of a good last meal.
