Trump Bashes Mattis After Former Defense Sec. Issues Scathing Statement About Him

President Donald Trump blew up at James Mattis, his former Defense secretary, on Wednesday night after the military leader publicly raked him over the coals for using militaristic force against American citizens to do a hokey photo-op in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church earlier this week.

Misuses “comprise,” but cheers to him.

Odd that there was no story on TPM about the Mattis op-ed until trump smeared him on twitter. Not news until you can put trump in active voice.

This certainly could not have been predicted.

Did anyone expect a different outcome?

That has been the turnips mode of operation forever. It is always the best ____ (person, company, you name it), as long as you agree and/or are working with him. The exact moment you say NO, you become the worst, a failure, bankrupt, ___ (again you name it).

“Probably the only thing Barack Obama & I have in common is that we both had the honor of firing Jim Mattis, the world’s most overrated General,” Trump tweeted. “I asked for his letter of resignation, & felt great about it.”

LIE: President Obama didn’t fire him. Technically, Barack Obama did not fire James Mattis.

Mattis is reported to have retired from the role of Commander of the United States Central Command in March 2013.

In his memoirs, Leon Panetta – Obama’s defense secretary between 2011 and 2013 – states that Mattis and the Obama administration didn’t always see eye-to-eye, especially when it came to Mattis wanting to increase the US presence in Syria. So while there may have been some tension, officially Mattis did retire, only to be brought out of his retirement by Trump.

Trump claims to have fired James Mattis himself but officially, just like in Obama’s administration, Mattis resigned as the Secretary of Defense.
However, the president is understood to have sped up his resignation and thus claims to have fired him.

When the nation enters its deTrumpification phase, it will be interesting, at the least, as politicians and others in and around government try to explain how they did not provoke one of these tweet storms but still deserve to be forgiven. Late in coming, but Mathis has his badge of honor, at least.

Another day, another hour, another “Trump Lashes Out” story. At this point, shouldn’t TPM have created a template in which all they have to change is the date, a proper noun, and the insult?

Roy Cohn boilerplate. Nothing to see here. Move along.

If Trump thinks “bashing”'s going to fix his problems he best get his bash motor running. Mattis is just the first. He’s the first one to leave the dark side and tell it like it is. A few have whispered from the sidelines but I suspect those guys will see Gen Mattis’s actions as opening the door for them to talk too. I wonder if the Death Star is ready?

The guys who come over after this and before the suicides start, should maybe be allowed to come back into polite society, but should never hold power or elected office again.

Same tired, cliched textual gruel from Trump implying that yet another of the “best people” he hired were unqualified and ineffective.

Donald is just mailing it in these days. This most recent screed doesn’t come close to matching or countering the rebuke that Matthis issued yesterday. It’s hard to come up with new material when you’re reduced to walking the halls of the White House wearing Kleenex boxes on your feet.

“I didn’t like his ‘leadership’ style or much else about him…"

This weirdly reminds me of when Trump inexplicably mentioned Heidi Klum during an interview when he first announced his candidacy.

“Heidi Klum. Sadly, she’s no longer a 10.”

James Mattis. Sadly, he’s no longer a 10.

OT but poor Lindsey Graham, his show trial of Rod Rosenstein defending trump that was supposed to generate headlines of exoneration got lost in the news. Thank you General Mattis.

This orange turd is boringly predictable.

Mattis will be another GOP’er that will have to confront how much he got it wrong. He may not have seen eye to eye with Obama ( and thank God Obama checked him ) but he was allowed to do that. Trump does not allow it. So Mattis like Comey and others made a choice based in partisan sentiments that led them to align themselves with a man that would eventually turn on them and in the case of many ruin them. Obama did not do this to any of them.

You used to ride on a chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain’t it hard when you discover that
He really wasn’t where it’s at
After he took from you everything he could steal?

Bob Dylan saw it coming.

We are witnessing a truly scary battle of 2 trends. The first is the increasing speed of Mr. Trump’s corruption of the Federal government. The second is the increasingly accelerating personal decline of Mr. Trump’s mental facilities, self-control and establishment support. Which trend will peak first?
