I hope that one of the civil trials trump is involved in removes a goodly bit of his money such that he hasta sell a major asset or two. And that one of his 4 criminal (yes criminal) indictments comes to fruition with a guilty verdict and a sentence to prison for real… no games…for real. There are 91 total chances folks.
The legal aspect is separate from my disgust with him as a man. He whines when he loses. Politics is transactional. Ya win or ya lose, but trump thinks he’s owed wins. It doesn’t work that way. He cheats on his wives, he sucks as a father. and he lies constantly which means he has no personal honor. And he is a coward. In short a failure as a man.
Enforcement power lies with Congress – see section 5 – which has not elected to pass legislation allowing the courts to decide who’s an ineligible insurrectionist and who is not.
I’ve voted in elections since 1968 and never felt the system was in any danger from within. But since trump came along and called his minions from under their many rocks and hiding places my confidence has eroded. This election will be the most consequential in the country’s history. Will we choose to be a democratic republic as we have always been or will we become and autocracy answerable to one demented individual? Should trump win I may be forced south to Mexico and become an expat for the duration of my remaining years. I will not live here without the system we have known.
Accept Trump isn’t trying to leapfrog the Federal Court hierarchy. State Supreme Court cases are appealed directly to the Supreme Court.
I don’t have a problem with SCOTUS waiting on the Appeals Court for the immunity decision. They will likely rule fast, cabin a stay - as Colorado did - to something much less than the 30 days which is the limit for SCOTUS appeals of Circuit cases. And unless something crazy happens at the circuit, Trump’s argument that the court should have both District and Circuit rulings before making their decision may well come back to haunt him.
Attorneys for the former president argued that only Congress could decide whether Section 3 of the 14th Amendment applied to Trump…
I’m not a lawyer (does it show?), but I was taught that the legislative branch of our government creates the law, while the executive branch is responsible for enforcing it.
