Trump Aides Fret Over POTUS’ Moves Toward Gun Control

President Donald Trump seems to be taking the first steps toward addressing gun violence after the deadly shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio earlier this month – and that’s apparently making his advisers nervous.

about possible gun control policies

Only because he looked bad and his trips to Dayton and El Paso were PR fiascos. He doesn’t give a rats about anything but himself and maybe Ivanka

Remember his lovely White House discussion with Parkland survivor students and parents complete with crib notes reminding him to say “I care” and promise to “do something” about gun control? Remember his complete walkback in the days immediately following? Yeah, we can trust him…

Claiming that Pat Toomey and Joe Manchin constitutes bipartisanship is completely bollocks.

I’m surprised he didn’t call in somebody who really knows bipartisanship, like Joe Lieberman.

“The advisers reportedly fear backlash from Trump’s base if he were to co-sign any of the gun restrictions that have been recently floated by members of Congress …”

Co-sign?

Still, I think their fears are misplaced as he probably won’t sign much of anything and there probably won’t be much of anything to sign. Although, I wish they were dead-on correct - universal background checks, ban and buy-back of assault-style weapons, ban on high-capacity magazines … and a Trump loss in 2020, with Democrats keeping the House and taking the Senate. I’d bite all my fingernails completely off for that.

Fuck his base.

While requiring universal background checks is a nice bandaid, background checks would have prevented very few of the mass shootings. Banning assault weapons and weapons that can be modified into assault weapons, coupled with required registration and insurance for all guns, as we require for cars, would be a much more effective method.

Trump’s advisors fear loss of the ardent pro-gun forces … Trump may be ignoring them or is drunk on the idea that he can win a battle of wills & after a bit of strife - force them to fall back in line behind him

Will the gun forces tolerate a bit of wavering? or will they do like Reagan did to Ford in 76 - instead of throwing all his strength behind old Gerald - he sauntered off and rode his palomino pony on the pacific palisades… or will they fear a land slide and sweeping regulation.

It is a race against time. Trump is playing chicken with the NRA. Will they even meaningfully exist by the time it really matters?

Well that is alluding too much intelligence to Trump. Never mind.

Trump is weak and lazy. He will offer no serious gun control legislation. If he did, a poison pill would accompany it (like money for his wall, or restricting legal immigration, etc). Also, the GOP Senate is owned by the NRA.

Exactly, I don’t even know why the aides are sweating this out, Trump doesn’t know much, but he does know that guns are central to his base, he would not let ammosexuals down.

Five more Democratic Senators would transform The Rump into the singular, transcendent politician he imagines himself to be, the one who could get this done when Obama failed.
