It won’t be a setback for long.
The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed Mississippi to enforce a social media age-verification law for now, rejecting an emergency bid from tech industry group NetChoice to block the measure.
The brief, unsigned order drew no noted dissents, but Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote separately that the law will likely ultimately be found unconstitutional.
Kavanaugh wrote, "In short, under this Court’s case law as it currently stands, the Mississippi law is likely unconstitutional. Nonetheless, because NetChoice has not sufficiently demonstrated that the balance of harms and equities favors it at this time, I concur in the Court’s denial of the application for interim relief."
Do you mind if I bug you this morning?
Giant Mesquite Bug - Thasus neocalifornicus. Largest Coreid bug. Can reach 2” in length. This one was only about 1.5”. In Madera Canyon yesterday.
No Heather and a short Krug today:
and here’s a NY Times headline.
Like the use of “fester,” but is the Times actually endorsing the use of US military in cities to “reduce crime?”
Shheshus christ almighty!!!
Has the motherfucker croaked yet?
Meanwhile, in Wisconsin -
Same thing Judge Dugan did - asked to see the warrant as they try and arrest someone in the courtroom. Didn’t even sneak anyone out the door. “Resign or be fired.”
The fake normality of everyday life in a country plunging into dictatorship:
Off topic:
“Crackdown”
Wouldn’t it be great if people who knew better would stop misusing this word?
Even MSNBC covers the “crackdown on Chicago.”
What is being cracked down on? Democracy?
You “crack down on” stuff like financial fraud, sexual assault, etc. (you know, stuff Trump does).
Wouldn’t it be great to see different headlines like:
“Hostile takeover of Chicago is Trump’s goal”
and
“State governors crack down on overreach by Feds”?
Our Weekend at Bernie’s president continues to commit human rights violations, this time focusing on children.
A month after the protest, the came to his home, arrested him, dragged him in front of a judge charged with “conspiracy to impede or injure officers”.
Linked arms with other protestors and blocked the driveway. Faces a 6 year sentence.
It will get much worse.
TPM, commenters, I haven’t kept a tally, but I keep reading almost daily of Republicans in deep-red districts getting their asses handed to them in town halls. But there is little analysis of who shows up: are they the Democrats who live in these red districts, or is it a more-or-less representative cross section? Any thoughts?
OTOH, how will these clods vote? Sure, a Gallup or Pew poll will invariably reveal that 70% of the public is in favor of national health care, but in the privacy of the voting booth, they’ll generally choose the candidate who vows to keep Satan out of the public schools. Is losing their health insurance or crop deficiency payments enough to actually change their vote?
Just crawled out of RFK Jr’s ear
The dispute in this case is whether Louisiana can be required to draw two congressional districts where Black voters have a fair chance to elect candidates of their choice. Black people make up nearly a third of Louisiana’s population but historically have had influence in only one of six congressional districts.
After initially defending a recently created map that added a second minority-majority congressional district, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has executed a troubling bait-and-switch. She has pivoted to argue that race-conscious redistricting is itself unconstitutional under the 14th and 15th amendments.
That’s right, folks, by giving Blacks a smidgen of representation, you are depriving Whites of total control and supremacy.
ew. Yes. I mind. ![]()
(I got a thing about bugs…)
Looks like he’s going to announce DoD being changed to War Department today. NYT Liveblog:
President Trump will make “an exciting announcement related to the Department of Defense” on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.
Also this:
A House committee plans to meet on Tuesday with 10 people who have accused the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein of sex trafficking, putting further attention on an issue President Trump has sought to downplay.
Mr. Trump’s supporters have been galvanized by conspiracy theories that Mr. Epstein was only one among a cabal of pedophiles in the upper echelons of American society. Mr. Epstein died in 2019 while in prison awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
