Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday that preliminary intelligence indicated Iran shot down a Ukrainian jet carrying 176 people, including dozens of Iranians and Canadians.
Oh, and in other news - I’m glad it was the Canadians and not the US who said it. I have a feeling the Canadians have a better reputation for telling the truth these days.
Root cause : Proximate cause. Plenty of blame to go around here.
“One reporter said Wednesday’s crash seemed to be “the end result of a sequence of events that was sparked by the drone strike ordered by the U.S. president.”
I can’t vote against the Ayatollahs, but I can sure as hell vote against Trump and every Republican on the ticket.
From Wikipedia: “Iran Air Flight 655 was a scheduled passenger flight from Tehran to Dubai via Bandar Abbas, that was shot down on 3 July 1988 by an SM-2MR surface-to- air missile fired from USS Vincennes, a guided missile cruiser of the United States Navy.”
I get the feeling we’re in the same causal territory on this one, with the Iranians pulling the trigger this time around.
“Several reporters asked the prime minister if the United States bore any responsibility for the tragedy.”
One reporter said Wednesday’s crash seemed to be “the end result of a sequence of events that was sparked by the drone strike ordered by the U.S. president.”
Let’s look back a few days for help in answering those questions:
Who knew that in 30 years hijacking passenger airplanes would be replaced with shooting them out of the sky?
And yet hijacking cruise ships didn’t become more of a thing?
Proximate cause is a legal concept used to establish liability. So if you loan someone your car and a drunk driver injures her your actions may part of the chain of causation but the proximate cause of her injury is the action of the drunk driver. I would be different if you knowingly loaned her a car with defective brakes and she crashed it. The proximate cause of this tragedy was the action of the SAM operator although Trump’s actions were clearly part of the chain of causation and created the “fog of war” that contributed to the tragedy.
“The evidence suggests that this is the likely cause,” Trudeau said, though he later hedged in response to a similar question that it was “too soon to be drawing conclusions or assigning blame or responsibility.”
This x 1000. I just do not understand it. I trust Trudeau will get it sorted out with the rest of the international community. Trump just needs to keep his yap closed on this. No one wants to hear from Donald Trump.
