Former Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS), the former Senate majority leader, was abruptly fired from one of D.C.’s top lobbying firms on Monday. But it’s still not clear what prompted the break between the former top Senate Republican and lobbying arm of Squire Patton Boggs.
We feel we will have our pick of about 5-10 new Republican ex-Senators to choose from come November, so it’s a good time for us to move on from the old racist for a fresh batch.
“This whole thing boils down to a very simple equation: Breaux and I decided it was time to move on to another firm, a strictly public policy firm,” he said. “Word got back to the firm and they decided to try to undermine our ability to get clients. … We’re not mad at anybody.”
This is a completely plausible explanation. If you get wind that one of your rainmakers is about to become a competitor, you can him immediately to minimize client loss.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure there’s a tsunami of more deplorable racism from that sonofabitch Lott that’s about to surface. The law firm decided to get out in front of it.
“When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either."
December 5, 2002
Trent Lott said at Strom Thurmond’s birthday party. Foot in mouth disease! Probably associated with his recent firing.
TPM also dredged up an interview Lott gave to the neo-Confederate magazine Southern Partisan and aired his longtime connections to the white supremacist group Council of Conservative Citizens.
Hopefully: “We’ve just realized that Republicans are going to be a spent force as lobbyists in about six months, and we want to get our hooks in some Democrats while the going’s good.”
Trent Lott voted AGAINST all three Articles of Impeachment brought forward in the impeachment proceedings against Richard Nixon. That tells you absolutely everything you need to know about this man.
In related news, Squire Patton Boggs removed the embalmed corpse of Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) from its place at the head of the partners’ mahogony dining table.
It is entirely possible that it got back to them that Lott was preparing to jump ship and take clients. This is exactly how many or most law firms would act in such a situation.
Of course, it is also possible he said something racially insensitive to a corporate client, but I assume sophisticated clients know exactly what they are getting with Lott and the access he sells.
