Tom Steyer Makes 2020 Bid Official | Talking Points Memo

NO!

Have not we had enough recent experience with a billionaire President with no previous experience in Government and Elected Office?

And another mediocre white guy. Bah

I haven’t read one post on any liberal site that’s reported on this guy’s running that thinks what he’s doing by throwing his hat into the ring is a good idea. Not one.

The guy is going through a divorce btw and if this is a way to piss off his soon-to-be ex-wife, I’m sure he’s already achieved that without running for Prez. What a waste of time, money and attention on a failed idea to promote himself. There are so many better ways, dude.

Who is his constituency exactly? Anyone can hire a bunch of toadies and political operatives to create a campaign. They’re a dime a dozen these days. FFS, its free money while it lasts…Wake the fuck up, Tom. We don’t need another white guy billionaire in the Oval Office. We’ve already had our fill.

ā€œVote for the true billionaire! No money laundering munts!ā€

Hi, I am Tom Steyer. And all those Impeach Trump ads on TV…they were just a preamble to my announcement that ME, MOI, MYSELF, YO, IO, EU, think I should be President. Instead of that Starbucks carpet bagging interloper!!!

ā€œIndividual control by rich guyā€ and ā€œcorporate controlā€ are very different things.

Corporate control is bought by nameless people in board rooms who launder their influence through PACS and campaign funds and fundraisers, building a network of interdependence.

Individuals who are already wealthy are, actually, far less likely to be beholden to corporate influences than those who come up through the machine.

(Though one could argue that they are also likely to be heavily capitalist, but that’s a different discussion.)

It was a good launch video. He’s in the Warren/Sanders lane, and I think there were aspects of his presentation that really updated the ā€˜anti-corporate power’ argument for the present era that are better than what Bernie has presented to date. I also thought he cut through to the crux of the climate change issue much better than Inslee or others have. His bona fides as a pro-impeachment politician are well established. I think he’ll be much more of a factor than the other 1% polling candidates. I think he adds value.

Well he will bring the subject of impeachment on the debate table. Not sure if that is wise and it may just mobilize his base to come out and vote.

The launch video is very, very good. Something about his smart yet homespun style appeals to me. But getting in this late and doing so as another messianic figure coming down out of the hills to save us is truly problematic. He’s just another add-on - and an unhelpful one - at this point, IMHO.

I’m all for billionaires liberating their vast wealth from Cayman Islands banks and spending it back into the American economy, especially when the likes of Donald Trump or Joe Biden have no intention of taxing it back into the American economy…

I read an interview with him a while back where he said he’d enter the race if Democratic leadership continued to do nothing on impeachment.

When do we get to see his tax returns?

Great big fat checkbook that he isn’t afraid to use.

But if he’s ā€œinā€ the race, he’s going to give the lion’s share to his own campaign.

I think he wants the Democratic Party to have a culture of action, and to stop this attitude that we only fight the fights if there is a 100% chance of victory and 0% risk. I know he is on the minds of Dem leadership like no other billionaire politico. I don’t think the recent activism by Dems on getting hearings, subpoenas and cases moving is an accident. They’ve known Steyer is coming for a while and I could see the frustration on my own MOC’s face at a recent town hall over him even though no one in the audience had even given him a thought. They respect his political skills and acumen. If Steyer forces Dems to play offense more on matters of oversight that will be an important value add to shape and frame the 2020 election.

Speaking of billionaire presidential longshots: https://www.politico.com/story/2019/07/09/h-ross-perot-dies-1402875

I think Castro, Harris, and conversely, O’Rourke and Biden, might disagree with you on that.

Early debates, particularly in a crowded field, can have a definite impact. As voters start locking into their candidates, the debates have less of an impact. By the time we get to the General Election, debates have zero impact on changing voters minds.

But at this early point, they definitely have a part to play in forming voter opinion.

You’re a billionaire. How about you do something productive instead?

God point. I will concede that having him in the race might advance this is a possibility. It still seems he’s come in too late to achieve that goal.

Great. If he wins then he can go ahead and imp… Oh. Nevemind.
