TOKYO (AP) — Almost two months after the Tokyo Olympics were postponed, organizing committee CEO Toshiro Muto said Friday he still could not give an estimate of how much the one-year delay will cost.
Junk article. For instance, the salt lake city olympics received a nearly billion dollar federal bailout, sochi went 2 times over anticipated costs. Don’t you find it a little bit suspicious that all but one of the “profitable” olympics reports a “profit” that is less than 1 percent of the gross? The olympics as currently constructed are a boondoggle.
It’s not an event designed to make a profit. Almost by definition, events like the olympics are designed to spread money around. Ideally without too much in the way of excess losses, but profit is something that would have to be accounted for and paid out. (A friend worked for a “nonprofit” institute that did contract work in the defense sector. They paid above-market salaries to recent college graduates, had amazing benefits, cushy offices… by law, all the surplus that would in a for-profit enterprise be returned to the shareholders went instead to the employees and to the infrastructure of the business.)
Love those! To be fair it is more compelling that the abysmal coverage of many Olympic sports. Sometimes we want to cheer for non-US athletes too, and really don’t care about the “human interest” profiles or lengthy features on the local food. Just put on a badminton qualifying round and shut up.
Watching the coverage makes me feel like an Ugly American. It’s not a great way to engage the viewer base.
