‘This Is About Much More’ Than Riggs: The Latest In The North Carolina GOP Judge’s Attempt To Steal An Election

The ongoing Republican effort to steal last year’s North Carolina Supreme Court race — the only 2024 race that has not yet been certified — continues this week after a federal court ordered the State Board of Elections to comply with a state court order that could potentially disenfranchise thousands of overseas and military voters. …

The Republican Party exists no more:

“I believe the American people will reject the politicization of our judiciary. When the people begin to hear the truth, they will demand an independent judiciary, free from high pressure politics and founded on the principle of judicial restraint.” — President Ronald Reagan, excerpted from remarks at the Republican Governors Club Annual Dinner, October 15, 1987

Ironically, the Dem’s vote ratio will likely increase with any of these votes not counted, since military personnel are generally more likely to vote Republican.

(ETA: I forgot that they, of course, cherry-picked only Dem stronghold counties. But, it could still end up increasing the spread for the Dem overall.

If this “curing” happens - and it should not! - let’s hope that is the case.

And, then taunt these motherfuckers mercilessly and incessantly if so.)

" When any number of voters are disenfranchised, everyone loses, especially those who volunteered to serve our country"
It’s not a good look for the Conservative Republicans who drape the flag upon their shoulders, yet want to deny the vote to people in uniform. But I guess they are just following the lead of the their convicted felon leader who called the Vets, like my late husband, suckers and losers…

Also, is it just me or aren’t anonymous ballots separated from envelopes?

How in the world will they know whose ballot is whose if this is the case?

If they aren’t anonymous, then what you’re saying is that there’s a way to track for whom each person voted.

That seems, ummmmmm, dangerous right now.

This is exactly why the Rethug/Teaparty NC State Legislature put all these stupid new “rules” in the way of letting people /vote. Since they are all cheaters, they think everybody else cheats also. And the bonus for them is that they can pull out some subsection of their “laws” and invoke some interpretation of it to disenfranchise anyone who might have voted for a Democrat. This is just another skirmish in the rightwing war against democracy. A war that we actual sane Americans cannot afford to lose, and we are at a tipping point that we cannot ignore expecting the courts or anyone else to rectify the assault.

I don’t quite look at this as you do. But yeah there’s some anger and disbelief on the Republican’s side that their boy lost to a girl. Also some self delusion that in NC in 2024 they couldn’t get the blow out that they schemed and planned for.

I was having a little discussion with someone on bluesky this morning about the SAVE Act, and what documents you’ll needed to register to vote. And this person pointed out that REAL ID is not sufficient to prove that you’re citizen, because DL’s can be attained by non-citizens. But I countered with one of the documents that I could show to get a REAL ID was a birth certificate.
This is all turning into a quagmire of arguing which docs prove your citizenship and which don’t. And if a passport is the definitive document then why do we have pay so much money to get and keep renewing it?

Exactamundo. I have attempted to probe that way of being and have failed. I ask myself, 'self, do I engage in that habit of mind?’ The reply is, ‘I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.’ I don’t think I cheat. Maybe MAGAs think the same. How self-aware are the MAGAs that if you’re not cheating, you’re not winning?

What does a Republican do when he loses? Cheat harder. We’ll see more and more of this, as the Republican Party becomes increasingly toxic and its candidates more certifiable.

Rethugliklans really love (screwing) the military.
I hope they remember this when it comes time for a military coup to save our democracy.

Riggs is one of the attorneys that represented the people who challenged the partisan gerrymandering in North Carolina that led to the US Supreme Court announcing that political gerrymandering was a political question not subject to review. (Rucho v Common Cause et al) I suspect the intensity of the challenge to her election is the result of Republicans not wanting someone who dared challenge their rule of North Carolina in a position of power.

Sure, let’s change the rules after the fact. They are completely shameless and amoral. I really hate the modern Republican Party.
