Republicans… say they’ll refuse to vote to raise [the debt ceiling].
Republicans intend to stiff contractors who’ve already provided a contracted service, and, for good measure crash the entire economy through an unpredictable catastrophe.
That’s what businesses want? That’s why they vote Republican?
I just had a revelation about why Trump is so terrible at dealmaking, and don’t laugh if you all saw this from the beginning, but his one move, the only one he knows, is to see that you want a thing and triple its price. People walk away every time, and I just realized that it’s because Trump himself doesn’t understand forgoing something he wants if the price is too high. If he wants a thing, he must have it, like the Plaza, which he was told wouldn’t make back the mortgage bill if every room were booked every night.
In case anyone was wondering here are the Republican senators that voted for the bill.
Roy Blunt of Missouri
Richard Burr of North Carolina
Bill Cassidy of Louisiana
Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia
Susan Collins of Maine
Kevin Cramer of North Dakota
Mike Crapo of Idaho
Deb Fischer of Nebraska
Lindsey Graham of South Carolina
Chuck Grassley of Iowa
John Hoeven of North Dakota
Mitch McConnell of Kentucky
Lisa Murkowski of Alaska
Rob Portman of Ohio
Jim Risch of Idaho
Mitt Romney of Utah
Dan Sullivan of Alaska
Thom Tillis of North Carolina
Roger Wicker of Mississippi
And because I can’t keep everything in my brain who on here is considered vulnerable? Blunt is my senator and he’s retiring, so he can vote for whatever without incurring a cost.
I’m thinking that Sinema and Manchin are going to get sidelined pretty quick, now that the dam has burst on legislating in the Senate finally. Basically, Biden isn’t a newcomer to Senate wrangling of legislation; I wouldn’t write up this bipartisan infrastructure bill to Schumer’s acumen is what I’m saying here. Getting this bill passed required a lot of compromise AND promises of other legislation to come that benefit the constituencies of individual Senators. I think Biden now has a decent idea of what each Senator wants with regard to other legislative priorities…which would give him and the DP leadership a leg up on creating coalitions to support various legislative intiatives.
That’s very true. He just doesn’t. He HAS to have the thing and at any price. The election is a fine example. All of his actions surrounding his loss may ultimately be the reason he can never run for president again.
This is Pelosi helping Schumer keep his troops in line and on board for the whole agenda (looking at you, Manchin and Sinema.) No walking away with a mini-package and letting the rest of Biden’s agenda die.
Well, Chuck Schumer gets a major victory as Majority Leader and before he can bask in well earned acclaim, Andy Cuomo steps all over his glory and pushes him out of the news. Sigh!
“Sinema, amazingly, has said that she refuses to miss her scheduled vacation”
Did she stamp her foot petulantly as she expressed her anger at being “Dissed” that way?
Sinema is a worthless piece of crap, one bought by unknown and hidden owners to whom her soul belongs. She certainly has no interest in benefiting the United States.
I assume there are plenty (including you?) who know what its like on the ground in AZ. I live in Texas and don;t follow AZ politics but, I bet its not as blue as we would like. Maybe she actually is representing a light purple state?
In any event, her stance on the filibuster re: voting rights is like saying, “sure Negros have the right to vote but my constituents don’t think so, therefore…” circa 1965.
Just a huge win for Schumer. This has been a process that started 4 months ago. He has navigated through all of McConnell’s poison pills to get this vote done. It is one of the most significant public infrastructure/public works projects in decades, but it will pale in comparison to the reconciliation bill, which is Great Society/New Deal level worthy.
The deal Schumer struck with Manchin/Sinema is that Dems/WH would give full backing to a bipartisan bill so long as they voted for reconciliation. I believe Manchin/Sinema will hold up their end of the bargain though there might be some performative whining along the way. Pelosi will have to hold the House but she holds all the cards. Progressives won’t vote for the bipartisan bill without the reconciliation bill. It’s a respect thing at this point. A deal has to be a deal at some point and I think the mods are understanding that. There’s nothing in the reconciliation bill that’s unpopular.
My prediction is that we’re going to get more Sinemas in the near future. The addiction to instant feedback via social media has created at least one full generation of performance artists.
Mitch has been sort of quiet lately. I wonder if he’s having a touch of Boehnerea, fed up with the antics of the lunatic fringe and TFG and just saying fuck it. Hope springs eternal.
