The Sausage Making: Pre-Admission Admissions About The New Climate Reality | Talking Points Memo

Congress is back in session, but we’re continuing what began as a recess-time series of evening briefings on the reconciliation negotiations. Check in here to find out how the sausage-making is going.

Fuck Joe Manchin.

So 330 million people have to care more about one rich man keeping a job he doesn’t need, and a preening trollop who doesn’t even plan on keeping hers, than the welfare of every person in the country. What a fucked up system.

One representative quote: “It needs to stay at a high level,” Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) said of the family income cap. “Not as high as it is, but we need to keep it at a high level.” The current cap for getting the full credit, as established in the American Rescue Plan, is $150,000 per family.

I agree: we need as much buy in as possible to prevent it from becoming another “welfare” plan, portrayed, first, as giving money to the “undeserving,” then as something badly in need of reform and, finally, as something we’d have been better off not trying in the first place. And, the money could be better spent somewhere else.

With friends like Manchin, who needs Rethuglicans?

Hope fades…

Precisely. Social Security’s universality has made it politically impossible to kill, while AFDC was dismantled because it was easy for people to believe it only helped “those people”.

Uggh. I’m really sick of the Manchin Candidate. Can he ‘accidentally’ take a rapid journey to the bottom of a WV mine shaft the next time he goes home to play at being a populist?

I have to admit I’ve been puzzled that anyone thought that Manchin would support a carbon tax. No matter what you think of the guy, its pretty clear he knows that coal is made of carbon

Our best bet at this time is to get as much funding for climate science, and try to get more D senators, so we don’t have to pay attention to Manchin’s wish list going forward.

Don’t be an idiot.

Drum is right, Manchin is the most Dem that West Virginia will elect and for Fuck’s Sake, if the Trump years did not teach anything, it’s how fucking stupid the idea that even a Dem like Manchin is no different than Republican control.

Without Manchin and yes Sinema there would not even be a small pipe dream of a hope to get anything. Nada, Zero, Zilch of the proposed bills

It’s typical Purity Ponyism on the Left that rather than seeing what can be gotten now as a huge win compared to the Trump years, rather the Left wants to get into circular firing squads and cursing their own allies over not achieving magical reach goals.

Reminder; ex Biden and yes, Sinema and Manchin (and the Georgia Senators of course too) this would be mini-Trump agenda time even with a Biden win with the Turtle controlling the Senate.

Lefties need to goddamn recalibrate, and look at the win in hand rather than moaning over not achieving the big reach. Celebrate the turn-around and build up.

I understand the frustration. Kinda not cool phrasing as it implies you say this because she dresses provocatively.

I think if you simply called them both assholes it captures it. If we must referring to both as “corporate whores”… maybe sheds that connotation

Both senators deserve your disregard but we should be careful in our language.

We need to get the fuck out of this union. It is literally suicide to stay part of the US at this point.

Absolutely.

Never mind the direct action - right now the technology and the costing is trending very favorably to Renewable, and in Europe like France even Nuclear (of course Lefty Greens can’t pull their heads out of the 1980s…). Fusion is now seeming not like the “always the future” but actually becoming within reach.

Dump the cash into climate science R&D, both long reach and near commercialisation. This money now can accelerate market readiness for new energy tech. RE no longer needs 100% direct gov action and subsidy, rather grease the wheels for more and faster tech adoption, the market will now drive the rest, it’s (contra the neanderthal Right bullshit) not 1970 nor 1980 nor even 1990 anymore in solar and wind tech and more climate tech brought to market will accelerate market adoption now.

Dump the cash also into grid upgrades, less controversial stuff like boosting interconnections which actually secretely boosts renewables by enabling long-distance power wheeling and thus bigger RE market to help balance consumpt-generation timing issues.

Oh yeah. “literally” . Just like Lefties were literally gonna move to Canada or Europe when Bush the Younger and Trump got elected. Not…

Enough Drama Llama idiocy.

Focus on getting practical movement, step by step.

So we can end up with a Trumpist Republican to replace him. Oh that would be really a win, a gain, now wouldn’t it.

Jesus think a bit.

The entire northeast VA to ME. We have water passage to MI which connects to IL. I’m down. I already would flyover the rest to get to west coast anyway

Then what is the point of anyone other than Manchin drafting/proposing legislation if, in the end, the Democrats let him dictate what can and can’t be passed.

Also, consider the fact that if the BBB bill is only a couple of hundred million, with requirements, such that most people won’t clear, do you think that the Progressives/Left of Center Representatives will get re-elected? Why would you re-elect someone who can’t keep their campaign promises, or get legislative passed because some rich white Red Dog Democrat has veto power over the entire Democratic Agenda.

Honestly, the Dems need to either nuke the process, pass nothing, take a possible hit, or say to Manchin, you propose all future legislation and we will rubber stamp it.
