About SCOTUS and immunity for Trump: The entire question was already decided in the first decade of the 19th century. And the answer was, there is no question - the law applies to everyone.
Aaron Burr was indicted while the sitting Vice President for the murder of Alexander Hamilton. There being no Federal murder law at the time, nor today’s Federal civil rights denial laws that are a stand-in for murder, it was a state indictment (New Jersey). It was dropped, not because of any bogus immunity issue, but because while Burr was shot iin New Jersey, he died in New York, and New York declined to prosecute.
However, after Burr left office, he was indicted and brought to trial for treason. The Constitution defines proof of guilt of treason as requiring either a confession or corroborating testimony by two or more witnesses, and due to the nature of Burr’s treason, only one witness was available in the US and testified; hence, Burr was acquitted on that technicality.
These two legal cases show that there is no question as to whether a member of the Executive has immunity from legal proceedings, either after leaving office or while still sitting - there is no immunity; the law applies to everyone. Some might argue that the precedent applies only to the Vice President, while the President has different responsibilities. While that last about responsibilities is true, it’s irrelevant - there’s no qualitative difference between the offices of President and Vice President other than the presence or absence of a heartbeat in the elected President; the VP is Constitutionally qualified and required to become President immediately if the elected one dies or is incapacitated.
So, first, the DOJ Opinion preventing investigating, charging, or trying a sitting President is a denial of long standing precedent and utter nonsense, and its only practical effect is to allow a criming President to continue their criming with impunity. And, second, over and above the fact that the Constitution says not a word about Presidential immunity, but instead talks about them being prosecuted for offenses, the entire concept of Presidential immunity is a farcical exercise in Constitutional annulment. That SCOTUS, or any Court, would even consider that there is any such question is proof of either their complete ignorance of our country’s legal history, or of their own deep partisan corruption.
DeSantis should plan his flee to self-exile
If Trump regains the WH … and is gifted with broad “immunity” … Trump will see to it that DeSantis will “vanish - just disappear- many people will say he did it to himself.”
I go with Leo Rosten, The Joys of Yiddish, myself.
In any event it’s phonetic. The u spelling (tsuris) corresponds to what I heard people around UCLA using (my first sustained exposure to people who use Yiddish extensively). I was at a USDA survey training course in SLC. One of my classmates was a State employee (NYDA) from New Yawk. The speaker said something pretty nuts, and I muttered something about, “That’s just meshuggenah.” She looked at me carefully. Now, I look like what I am. I’m an Anglo-american white guy. At the next break she came up to me and said, “What do you know from meshugennah?”
I said, “It means crazy, nuts,…stupid.”
“Yes. I know that. How do you know that from…” looking at my name tag, “Kansas.”
I laughed, and said, “I went to school at UCLA. A lot of my friends and classmates there are Jewish and use Yiddish. I picked it up while I was there. My masters’ is from K-State, and my officemate there for two years is Jewish. He uses a fair amount of Yiddish, too.”
Well since you posted this picture…
Yesterday I had just pulled into my driveway. I was sitting at the end of the driveway having a NPR driveway moment. I was listening to piece that wasn’t about Gaza, wasn’t about Trump, wasn’t about anything world shattering. It was a story about Jewish delis in Skokie, IL. I intended to go check my mailbox, but the story was just so NPRish good.
So while I was sitting there facing the creek in front of my house, I noticed movement downstream from my bridge. I watched as an owl flew 3 ft over my bridge, dip down a foot, continue it’s flight path up stream, and then under my neighbor’s bridge, and then it was out of sight.
So this thing that happened was a little amazing to me. Yes I’ve had “NPR driveway moments” before, but usually in a parking lot. Yes I’ve seen an owl flying in the woods around my house, but it was the two things happening at the same time. Maybe it happened because it was Feb. 29th?
I agree with that. Having taught school for 36 years I’ve watched the kids getting larger through the decades. Before I retired obese kids were everywhere. I’m talking all the way down to 2nd and 3rd grade obese children. It’s got to be their diet and lack of exercise. They spend all their time seated and staring at their cellphone. Go to the grocery store and look at what people put in their shopping carts, it’s mostly stuff that I would never eat. What’s supposed to pass as a healthy school lunch or breakfast is also junk. Especially breakfast because it’s whatever they can hand out in small packets or pop tarts or sugary cereal etc.
Honestly, all the J6 and 2020 stuff, it’s doing our side a favor if the can gets kicked past the election.
Everyone’s picked a side. If he’s convicted, “witch hunt”, acquitted is even worse for us because it vindicates him and some of the fence sitters come back because he was cleared.
The only choice then, since any criminal trial in any of his several indictments would likely happen after the general election is to vote for Biden and thereby save us from this [add epithet of your choice]. Should Biden win then trump will suffer the full extent of the law…
I hope. It likely will take the full 4 years of Biden’s second term.
And these foreign language entice us into inserting their words into OUR LANGUAGE! Hell we’ve even named some of our cities, towns, and whole states with their foreign words.
