One of the biggest hot spots in Arizona right now is at an immigrant detention center in Eloy. I’m not sure if overcrowding is also an issue, but the article describes a 460% increase in cases since Friday! https://wwwmirror.com/blog/covid-19-cases-at-eloy-detention-center-surge-by-460-since-friday/

Anytime you cram a lot of people into a small space, that’s an outbreak just waiting to happen.

The prison system in this country (like so many other institutions) is an absolute disgrace. No mention in the article, but is this a “privatized” institution? Just another scam for profit…

One of the saddest places in the world is the “old folks home” wing of any prison. I assume that most states transfer those prisoners to a specific prison, probably a medium security facility. Some prisoners act as caregivers for the patients. Given the overcrowding in prisons, Covid 19 is a death sentence for people who are just old, sick, and can’t get compassionate parole because they don’t have political connections. We should be ashamed.

The first few steps of justice reform need to include a ban on private prisons, private prison companies and the contracts that contribute to inequitable law enforcement just to fill cells for profit. Nobody but the government should be incarcerating anyone. Ever. And if our government doesn’t want the responsibility, then it can just cut the shit and stop incarcerating ANYONE.

You hearing me, Joe and Nancy?

This is also the other side of the failure of policing in the US…more criminals, racially profiled, shoved away into harsher and harsher conditions. The whole justice system really needs an enema, top to bottom.
