The MAGA Freakout Over Afghan Refugees Kicks Into Overdrive | Talking Points Memo

A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things.

As images filter out of Afghanistan of U.S. allies desperate to escape, and as President Biden pledges assistance to continue those evacuation efforts, MAGA world and the right-wing media are trying to gin up a new freakout: that the administration will resettle too many Afghans in the U.S.

They will huff and puff about Biden, and then complain about those immigrants in TX.

The RW whiplash has got to hurt. Going from…“oh, the horror Biden has wrought by abandoning allies in Afghanistan” to “you can’t resettle them HERE!!” in less than 24-hours without the slightest touch of irony is gobsmacking.

They will spin and spin, where it stops nobody knows.

In the way in which one’s imagination is captured by a good Bond villain or evil wizard in a sword and sorcery novel, Tucker Carlson is really fascinating. There seems to be no limit to how far he is willing to go. Countdown to when he appears on his show in a hooded white robe…?

Slightly OT, but I wonder how these events will affect this TV show’s ratings?

Current conservatives operate in a kind of quantum psychology: they can have multiple seemingly contradictory lines of argumentation going at the same time.

Ruh roh. A natural problem that doesn’t care about the politics of the effected people. There will have to be new allocation agreements that reflect the greatly diminished water flow. It’s too late to prevent this climate change shortage. Now we are going to begin to see the costs of keeping the fossil fuel industry fat and happy while farmers, ranchers, and eventually city people do without the limiting resource of water.

Unsurprised to see that Proud Body tweet. I bet some folks here are taking notes on what the Taliban did and would love to have their own shot at it. They already are fine with denying education and autonomy to women and girls.

You know, hobgoblins and all that.

The Republicans view this as an opening, facts and history be damned, so they’re going for it as they’ve been shown to be politically impotent by the Biden Administration. The President did ok with his speech, it was a tough decision, and no one should expect everyone to like it, especially those who feel he betrayed the military (nonsense) and those who want to live in an idealized world where everyone is safe and protected. Take responsibility, learn from it, and move on.

Respond by passing the legislation before the House and Senate, take on voting rights, etc. Fox and Friends will do and say everything to disrupt this possibility. A strong US (economically and intellectually) will win out. Most importantly, lets continue with the January 6th Insurrection Committee’s work and connect all those players who profess to love this country to their questionable actions. Stay the course.

The Biden Administration is smart enough to realize and to take this path. The instantaneous news cycle (I listened to CNN after the President’s talk and was amazed by their lack of understanding of reality and to be honest the misstatements of facts and emotional wish list of wants) is just that, so don’t respond to every comment as it detracts from what is most essential.

Q: What’s the difference between a Reich Wing news commentator and a roulette wheel?

A: The roulette wheel has angular momentum when it’s spinning.

Of course when the Afghan resettlement goes all to hell the Biden administration will say the exodus happened much faster than anyone could have predicted, there was just no way to sensibly plan for it, but not to worry, Joe takes responsibility, the buck stops at his desk.

It seems that it should, but it won’t. Over the last 40 years they have demonstrated that all their beliefs, objectives, and morals are completely situational. I think this is the only thing they have been consistent on: that everything is situational.

We see it as constant hypocrisy, but because they cannot be shamed, they don’t care. Every situation just has its own response. Because of this, from their point of view, there is no whiplash or inconsistency; they don’t care what they said before, if they even remember it.

None of this is a surprise. MAGAts are purely fueled by emotion, incapable of discerning contradiction in their ragings. The Stephen Millers and other Trumpsters just throw out any old red meat sound bite that will rile them up, as the whole point is to keep the anti-Dem rage machine operating at full speed. That the RNC removed the pages bragging about TFG meeting with the Taliban and agreeing to a pullout for last May just shows their blatant two-faced hypocrisy. The lies will continue.

It’s insane. And, sadly, it will continue.

ETA: The German Bundeswehr has sent a second transport plane to Kabul to carry out refugees. This has not appeared in the US news, but they are helping as best they can in this humanitarian crisis.

ETA 2: Refugees will be taken to Brandenburg (near Berlin) for processing. They’re loading as many people onto each plane as they can cram in safely.
