From NYT, an analysis suggesting that what Putin wants from the meeting with Trump is agreement not so much on specific territory in Ukraine, but moving Ukraine back under Russia’s sphere of influence as a buffer against the West. Not just a guarantee that Ukraine will never join NATO, but “political” influence in Ukraine, whatever that means. Restoring Russian language rights too, probably. Free gifted link:

For Putin, Trump Summit Is Key to Securing Ukraine Goals

The Russian leader sees direct talks with Trump as essential to achieving his ultimate aims in Ukraine.

This bears watching with the upcoming meeting between Trump and Putin, because Trump will give away Ukrainian sovereignty with enough flattery. The only positive side is that Ukraine will not agree to this, and there is no ceasefire or end to the war without their agreement.

ETA: C’mon TPM, please fix links to NYT like this that don’t show a preview. It’s a PITA to hand-edit for context.

No big deal, all a rape conviction gets you is housed in a minimum security facility for a year with work release hours and unfettered liberties on the grounds.

The same as the NRA’s–No age limit.

That does seem to be the mindset, as baffling as that may be.

It does remind you of the ICE fellows pressing charges against demonstrators after they tried to beat the shit out of them.

Donnie lies and plays a part so constantly it’s impossible to know what’s his and what’s a put on.
My association is how he’s continued to play up the purportedly stollen election in spite being told it didn’t exist by his own officials.
He’s nefarious.
If being demented, or just acting demented, provides a path to his removal, OK.
If it’s to give him some kind of a pass, I’m not ready to buy that.

trump is too stupid to remember that counting illegal immigrants in the Census isn’t where the battle is fought. It’s whether to exclude them from the apportionment of representatives among the states and in redistricting.

Stupid, stupid trump.

It’s an article shared by @david_kurtz and well worth reading

The forces dominating the Republican Party today are not willing to resolve that existential struggle within the confines of democratic self-government. They want to impose their version of “real America” by openly embracing state authoritarianism and militant extremism.

As a result, the conservative hold on power has become tenuous. In a narrow political sense, they may be in charge right now – in the White House, in Congress, at the Supreme Court. But it is not just political power the Right seeks. They desire cultural domination and affirmation. In the cultural sphere, the public square, and across many societal dimensions like the family, the shift in power away from white male conservatives has been more pronounced. The Right has engaged in a comprehensive counter-mobilization in response – a radicalization fueled not by a feeling of strength, but by a sense of weakness.
