Upon entering TPM’s New York City Global Headquarters, you won’t be greeted by a smiling receptionist, but rather a curious, and perhaps ominous, well-worn, black metallic softball bat.
Cool! (In my misspent youth I played softball on various manhattan fields, including a new york based publication. But it soon became clear that for many reasons – including the major investment of time and effort for permits to play at all – way too many teams were way too serious about winning games and not nearly interested enough in having fun.)
Getting field permits for softball in NYC reminds me of getting a spot on the National Mall in DC in the 1980s and 90s. Our office sent someone out to the Mall or the Washington Monument grounds by 1pm to claim an area of grass as our field. The National Park Service later replaced this free for all process with a permit system. That meant sending someone at 9am on game day to the Park Service building to line up for a permit granting a spot on the Mall or Monument grounds to be your field.
Ah softball - miss those days. My husband had a team right out of law school who played in the Young Lawyer’s League. They were extremely competitive and we used to win the state fairly regularly. It was a lot of fun.
