The Hard Reality Of Impeachment

Originally published at: The Hard Reality Of Impeachment - TPM – Talking Points Memo

President Donald Trump is not being impeached again (for now). On Tuesday, Rep. Al Green (D-TX) brought a resolution to the House floor calling for Trump to be impeached for launching military strikes against Iran without congressional approval. The House tabled Green’s resolution with a bipartisan vote that saw 128 Democrats vote with Republicans, while…

Good. It’s about motherfucking time this orange asshole had to go on the defensive, had to look over his shoulder. He’s been the fat as bully for six months, punching everyone with impunity. Now at least someone is willing to stand up to him. Bullies fucking hate that.

“My vote speaks for itself,” Jeffries said. “We’re going to continue to work on these issues of war and peace, to push back against the GOP Tax Scam, the effort to rip away healthcare from the American people, which includes the largest cut to Medicaid in American history and allow the appropriate committees like the Judiciary Committee, under the leadership of Jamie Raskin and the Oversight Committee, under the leadership of Robert Garcia, to do their work with respect to holding this out-of-control President accountable.”

Come on, Green! The consultants said we need to focus on kitchen table issues!

Wow, Senator Doctor Cassidy, MD! You’ve been a Republican all your life, and you still haven’t realized that members of your party Lie. All. The. Time?? You actually trusted Bobbie Junior, and voted to confirm him? Now you’re surprised that he did what he promised (everybody else) he would do?

Note to self: do not drink your own Kool-Aid. You know what’s in it – or ought to.

In a sense, I sympathize with Rep Green. But he’s also made a joke of himself with his weekly impeachment calls. Kind of like the old House of Republican Representatives and their weekly vote to repeal ObamaCare. Futile. Just going through the motions.

What Jeffries is really saying…‘let’s wait until he really does something outlandish. Now is not the time.’

not sure exactly what it is they are waiting for.

Putting lipstick on the pig doesn’t make it less of a pig. As Paul Krugman outlines, the BBB currently includes devastating cuts to medicaid and food stamps, programs that disproportionately benefit rural areas, and a sop to save a few clinics only delays their disappearance into bankruptcy as patients increasingly cannot pay. Combined with TrumPublican polices such as work requirements (that never work as advertised), out of control anti-immigrant enforcement (roughly 2/3 of farm workers are immigrants), and a ruinous trade war, a social disaster is rapidly unfolding.

While that disaster will affect all US citizens to some degree, the most negative impacts overall will fall upon ex-urban America. Krugman wonders if rural Trump supporters will get the message but personally I expect few will: the nature of cults is to dig in or ignore contrary evidence and the nature of tribalism is to accept pain if it is believed other tribe(s) suffer worse.

Al Green should NOT give up. He should be putting this on the floor every day and make the Republicans and Wimpycrats go on record that they will continue to let this fascist thug off the hook.

I do not want JD Vance to be President. Trump is a buffoon but predictable, Vance is nasty but smart. He will do more damage than DT.

Looking at the video, it seems that the damage caused to the Pakistani nuclear weapons depots in the war against that terrorist nation was more extensive yet focal and damaging than the attack on Fordow. Pakistan nominated President Trump for the Peace Prize and in appreciation, the US-controlled International Monetary Fund approved nearly $7B in loans the following week to rebuild the weapons.

It’s a move that RFK specifically told Cassidy he would not make in order to secure his confirmation vote.

A bamboozled Cassidy should lobby his colleagues in the House to impeach Kennedy. A show of camaraderie is the least they can do to protect the honor and integrity of the Legislative Branch.

Vance won’t be able to make the GQP cower every time he X-cretes and the press won’t fawn all over him like they do TSF, so he’ll be way less effective at getting (shitty) things done. All the rats will be scrambling over each other for the crown when TSF snuffs it, the infighting will be incredible - Rafael Cruz, Li’l Marco, slapdick Cotton, etc etc etc will be desperately knifing each other in the back.

Trump has a devoted cult following in the electorate, which creates unquestioning compliance from Representatives and Senators who want to be reelected. Those same Reps and Sens are also motivated by legitimate fear of retribution from the unstable mob boss in the White House. Vance does not have either one of those attributes.

Congress is failing. The only appropriate action to take in the face of consistent lawlessness of the president is to impeach him. Congress refuses. The reason they refuse? A large section of America is still under the cult of Trump. The thing is, we are so close to the point where the cult doesn’t matter. The power will be fait accompli, and Congress will forever be a rubber stamp on the dictator until the revolution.

Congress sat there and watched, sometimes with an expression of mild concern, as all of their power and influence and the entire point of their existence disappeared.

The courts, at the highest level, are even worse.

This will be the first cease fire in history that was accomplished with a single use of the F word. President Trump deserves the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Peace Prize for this achievement. It is poetry in action.

A majority? In both House and Senate? Otherwise, it’s the proverbial urination into a headwind.

It needs to be said: Republicans should care about separation of powers too. Republicans should care about Congress losing power. Republican congressman should be on Greene’s side when it comes to impeachment. Everyone should be on the record on the subject, and should be forced to be on the record on a daily basis.

Victory is not always the only point of action. Sometimes, actions which are bound to fail need to be undertaken, if for nothing else so that we can look back at ourselves in 20 years and not be ashamed.
