Manchin’s opposition, like his other rhetoric, is disingenuous at best. He’s says he’s against giving tax incentives to electricity generators for converting to cleaner technology when really he wants to make sure Big Coal is kept as a primary generation fuel.

I’ve been looking for info on this, but can’t find anything. There are a few articles behind WaPo and WSJ paywalls.
Manchin’s complaints are the same ones he had when he voted against McCarthy for EPA head back in 2013. He’s been pretty much a one trick pony on this.

West Virginia produces ~80 million ton of coal a year, at $50 a ton - that’s $4Bn. Just by all the fucking coal as part of the bill and be done with it. It’s a drop in the bucket.

Because they’ve got one shot, the reconciliation bill this year, to get anything done. Next year is too close to the election. Plus with no majority if one of the living fossils drops dead and is from an R state, they lose the ability to get anything done.

This is what happens when there is an effort to foster disinformation in the form of BothSiderism, sports analogies and win-lose thinking.
The idea was to get the best outcomes we could.
Very little of the narrative centered on that. Rather, there was combat, negative descriptions of positive efforts and emphases on differences rather than commonality.
