This is rich enough irony:
i. reengaging in the purportedly ended ‘forever war’ of the Cheney administration;
ii. attacking the same people Saddam would attack;
iii. to support a dictatorial regime that “takes away people’s freedoms (KSA,)” to be perverse.
Does someone really want a regional war in the Middle East or are they just too intellectually flat to apprehend what they’re doing?

Yes – Fauci’s lawyer’s are right: there’s no up side to answering this Congress’s questions.
As you point out, there’s no public relations victory to be had and the people conducting this “inquiry” will refer him to DoJ for prosecution for anything that can be cast as perjury AND this DoJ will try to try that referral.

Rand Paul insists Fauci’s chief attorney leave Fauci’s side. That move and his subsequent statements merely confirm Fauci’s justification for taking the Fifth, that Paul is obsessed with him and determined to put him behind bars (by setting up bogus perjury traps). Rand Paul is a despicable human being.

NB/ETA: NYT reports that Douthat has been hired as a “correspondent” which, considering his career as a conservative Chritianist pundit and author (AKA no news experience), suggests we may be entering Grey’s law territory vis-a-vis CBS management acumen; i.e., is it stupidity or malice and is there any real difference at this level?

An attorney for Anthony Fauci, seated beside him at the hearing room table, repeatedly tried to interject after Rand Paul wrapped his questioning, drawing the ire of Paul, who eventually directed security to remove the attorney.
Paul said the attorneys were allowed to be in the room, but not to testify, and the attorney was directed not to sit at the table but did so anyway.
“This is the way Anthony Fauci wants to be remembered for a lawyer not listening to the rules,” Paul said before directing security to remove the attorney. “Let the record state that Dr. Fauci will still have the advice of the other half a dozen attorneys that he brought along today.”

Are We at World War?
The United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Ukraine have all attacked Iran or Iranian interests, including in Lebanon and ships at sea.
Iran and the Houthis have attacked bases and infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, and Qatar
Iranian supplies to Russia to be used against Ukraine have been attacked.
There’s a whole lotta shaking going on
