During the 1972 Democratic campaign Senator Thomas Eagleton, a decent honorable man was selected by using “backroom” politics. Unfortunately there should have been some cursory vetting, which at the time wasn’t a thing. Would his treatment for depression have been flagged, maybe. Though the Nixon campaign might have know something. “He was hooked up to jumper cables”. Would vetting by the Nixon campaign have screened out Agnew. Who knows, but they might not have cared since they wanted a bulldog to go after the “hippies and uppity minorities”.

Well, according to NYT one option being considered is a snap election (state caucus) where voters would choose the replacement candidate. Apparently it’s either that, or a “pop-up convention” which sounds messier.
Can Platner compete in it?

If McConnell can stay “not dead” until some time in August, Kentucky can’t have a special election to replace him (sorry/not sorry, Massie).

He has to withdraw his candidacy for Senate first for that to happen, and I’m finding it hard to imagine how that makes him eligible for a state caucus, but who knows.
Another complication is that Platner is holding $2.2 million cash in his campaign funds as of the last FEC filing. Nowhere near enough to continue, and Collins has been vastly outspending him. What happens to that money?
There are limits on how that cash can be spent when a candidate withdraws from an election, but obviously the right thing to do would be to contribute to the eventual candidate. Or to charities or some other PAC if he doesn’t like the candidate.
