Texas Mayors to Governor: You Need To Let Us Enforce Rules About Mask-Wearing | Talking Points Memo

A group of nine Texas mayors from both sides of the aisle wrote to Gov. Greg Abbott (R) on Tuesday requesting that he allow them to enforce local regulations that would require masks be worn to protect against the coronavirus.

This is not going to end well for Texas Republicans.

Here is the new infections data for Texas (from the post, through yesterday)

The spread is just starting to get a deep foothold in Texas, and is now spreading rapidly. These figures show what the infection rate was like 7-9 days ago (due to delays in symptoms appearing, then getting test results back).

John Coryn is on the ballot this year, and a massive Covid-19 problem will likely doom him and Trump in Texas, along with crashing the economy.

And oh, Masks are viewed as necessary/important by the vast bulk of voters, including doubtlessly in Texas.

P.s. Quinipiac asked about Masks in a poll taken before the current upsurge in cases (May 28-June 1 field dates). Here were the results:

But hey, stand for no mask wearing on an issue where 65% of people disagree with you, before the pandemic got much worse.

I sure would like to discover a way to prosecute Abbott and the lot for deaths they intentionally caused.

My brother is on his fourth week on a ventilator, don´t know if he´s going to make it.

I want Abbott and all the people who are gaming this for political reasons to suffer like he is.

Fuck ´em.

So fucking absurd. I mean really, we call ourselves a society? A civilization? If there was a 95% death rate would this shit be happening? Every day it’s so embarrassing to be a member of this species.

Sorry to hear that. Everyone (almost) on the boards feels like family, it’s not a good feeling when it hits any of our own.

Just knocked wood for him and I’m sorry to hear that. I can imagine how much worse it would be thinking it could have been avoided. Best wishes to everyone.

So yeah anyway Texas. We have people just like that here but it’s not in the culture to be all tough and disdainful of caution. The evidence is mounting that masks work. We know it’s a bad disease. What else do you need to know? How irrational can you be to have the information and not act on it?

Oh, so sorry to read this. People do rally even after vents, so I hope he does. Stay well yourself.

If I could figure out how to fit a mask on a hoagie I would be wearing one too.

The followers and enablers of Trump have been likened to a cult. Those followers and enablers are transforming before our eyes into a death cult, but the potential victims include those outside of the cult.

Because Dear Leader told them it wasn’t manly and decided to politicize a public health crisis.

The time is passed for any leader to be kowtowing to a fake sense of “freedumb” by the minority of Texans or anywhere else. I live here and all I’ll say about Abbott is “Jade Helm”. Fuck him.

See, it’s like the Grand Canyon. You know it’s there, it’s pretty obviously there, and yet it’s staggering, it’s hard to believe.

Abbott did more than just refuse. He went off on our county judge, Clay Jenkins, for no other reason than Clay is a Democrat and right and makes Abbott look like the fool he is. He just insulted the shit out of Clay.

I fucking hate this motherfucker almost more than I hate Trump. I want Abbot, Patrick and Paxton gone soonest.

Arizona mayors should be saying the same thing to Ducey. He has prevented local/regional leaders from taking more restrictive actions than those he has declared.

I’m sorry to hear about your brother, Carlos. There are people who’ve done all right, even having been on a ventilator that long. Hopefully, your brother will beat the odds. Take care of yourself.
