Log Cabin Republicans? They’re still in existence? I give them props for their persistence - but Jeebus - they should know where they are not wanted.
About the platform: Texas Republicans want to undo the past 150 years of justice. Let it be repeatedly announced: Republicans want to take your rights away.
And yet the guy who knew he had mental health issues and called the police because he was thinking about shooting Kavanaugh was arrested and charged with attempted murder? Yes, yes, I know. IOKIYAAR
The Morrill Land-Grant College Act of 1862, or Morrill Act, Act of the U.S. Congress (1862) that provided grants of land to states to finance the establishment of colleges specializing in “agriculture and the mechanic arts.” Named for its sponsor, Vermont Congressman Justin Smith Morrill (1810–98), it granted each state 30,000 acres of federal land (a lot of which was stolen from Native Americans) for each congressional seat. Funds from the sale of the land were used by some states to establish new schools; other states turned the money over to existing state or private colleges to create schools of agriculture and mechanic arts (known as “A&M” colleges). The military training required in the curriculum of all led to the establishment of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, an educational program for future army, navy, and air force officers. The second Morrill Act (1890) initiated regular appropriations to support land-grant colleges, which came to include 17 predominantly African American colleges (HBCUs) and 30 American Indian colleges.
I likely was unclear.
The U of A gets no money from land income or sale today. Maybe when the University began in 1885 but not today. We do have a College of agriculture and we do have a university farm and small dairy where the darr family buys meat every Thursday if we need it but it isn’t near what the university needs to exist. In fact for clarity my BS and Master’s degrees were in Animal Science. And my first paying gig was in the “meats lab” as a quarter time grad assistant. My time was on the kill floor taking cattle, sheep, pigs or whatever from standing hoof to wrapped steaks. It convinced me to not eat a lot of meat and absolutely no pork.
There is a part of the AZ Constitution that says higher education should be as nearly free as practical.
Fucking lying Goober republicans killed that as they have controlled state government since 1969 without a break except for the governor’s chair on occasion. In 1968 the state covered 47% of the U of A’s operating cost. When I retired in 2012 it was below 7%. Bastards
And for all those collecting Social Security, military pensions, and such . . .
You can move back to the United States, or be considered citizens of a hostile power. There is no way that funds from the United States should prop up a foreign government.
Tell that to students receiving Pell Grants – THAT’S federal. And the loans they get from federally insured banks. A degree from a Texas school will become WORTHLESS.
Both chambers of the state legislature are relatively close. It’s 85-65 in the House and 18-13 in the Senate. Every one of those seats is up for election this fall too. As for the statewide offices, most of the margins were in single digits, and several were within just 3-5 points. I tend to look at the Texas Supreme Court races as the best indicator of the electorate’s partisan lean, because nobody much knows or cares about any of those candidates except for the R or D after their names. The 2018 margins in those races were between 6.4% and 7.2%.
All that said, voting was way, way up in Texas for 2020. It remains to be seen what the new electorate is going to look like this year, much less 2024.
It certainly is being glossed over. Axios was the only news source I’ve seen that covered it in any depth. I took screencaps of bits of it and put that in the Copy-Paste forum last night with a link to the complete text. It really is very extreme – and not just the part about Biden didn’t really win in 2020.
Yes, but there will inevitably be compensations, and many people will find that acceptable. If you’re a man, you’ll get life-and-death power over women and children. Both white men and women will get life-and-death power over minorities.
Basically, give some people the right to be sadistic to others, and they won’t care that their political rights disappear. Seriously, if that very deal were proposed to the GQP, I would bet that more than a few people would support it.
