A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things.
In a crossover that you never would’ve imagined in your wildest dreams, Terry McAuliffe is looking to tap into the Taylor Swift stan voting bloc to regain the Virginia governorship.
A business dispute in the recording industry? I don’t know, Terry. As a scandal I’d say it’s very much precedented. I’m not familiar with Ms. Swift’s work and maybe her fans are howling for Youngkin’s blood at this moment, but honestly this is an unsurprising October surprise.
Are these fake vaccine cards similar to the real card I got from the pharmacy when I got my shot? Is there a reason why they would need to be imported from China? Do those vaccine cards have bamboo fibers that are visible through double secret magnification?
My view on this is that McAuliffe is unimaginative and pretty corrupt but (a) he’s the Dem we’ve got and (b) he’s read the Taylor stans demographic right: they, and she, will rip Youngkin apart.
She may be a big pop star with all that entails (you know the way they seem to be fluff) but despite appearances she’s not exactly Britney Spears.
For example …
One that’s caused her to re-record her back catalogue so she’ll at least own the new masters. It’s not exactly a trivial issue to women voters aged 18-30. Scooter Braun is basically the Allen Klein of the youngest voting generation.
Well, see, I didn’t know she was from here. (Really here, like about an hour north of me.) Obviously she’s a big star with a lot of fans, you could live like the Unabomber and know that much, so maybe this’ll have some impact. I’m just so used to these guys being utterly appalling monsters that having been mixed up in some deal the artist didn’t like doesn’t seem all that scandalous. It’s not great, I personally wouldn’t touch a situation where people were trying to get control of an artist’s work, but it goes on all the time.
Look what you made me do, McAuliffe. I had to spend more than 22 minutes trying to come up with as many Taylor Swift songs to shoehorn into this post as possible.
Oh, boy… THAT’S what we’re spending time on in the TPM newsroom?
Anyway, I’m not sure how good a gambit this is for McAuliffe. The demographic that cares most about this issue famously doesn’t show up for elections, traditionally. This wouldn’t be a factor for me in voting or not voting for either candidate. It’s not relevant to running a State government.
Youngkin, a former CEO, tried to spin his suggestion as just standard business practice. “I grew up in a world where you have an audit every year, in businesses you have an audit,” he said.
Then why hasn’t election audits been part of the mainstream for the last 250 years? There’s a reason businesses are subject to audits - there are fewer controls on businesses than there are on elections.
