Tensions Escalate Over School Mask Mandates As Kids Return To Classroom | Talking Points Memo

Several schools are kicking off the first school year this week, and local officials are finding themselves at the center of a culture war over COVID-19 protection measures as GOP governors work to ban school mask mandates and angry anti-mask parents hijack school board meetings to rail against the mandates.

Tensions Escalate Over School Mask Mandates…

The Escalator King deserves a lot of the blame.

Texas officials in Dallas and Bexar counties are fighting against Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) mandate ban, and several of those officials have upheld their mandates today even after the Texas Supreme Court temporarily blocked their ability to pass mask rules at the local level.

I don’t think that the Texas Supreme Court blocked the ability of local school boards to pass mask rules at the local level so much as they upheld Gov. Abbott’s attempts to ban local school boards from doing so.

Fewer future Texans and Floridians is a bad thing?

Fighting against a mandate that school children wear masks is just so damn important  :unamused:

The causes that some folks choose to waste their time astounds me.

I’ve given thought to ridding the world of cilantro, but then I remember the new season of “Succession” starts soon and lose interest.

The funny(?) thing is, the typical dynamic is that most kids seemingly don’t mind wearing masks; it’s that their parents mind their kids wearing masks.

It’s not the masks so much as the principle that their kids grow up to be assholes too.

Always wondered about the optics of that hysterical moment, seems like symbolically he should have been riding “up” rather than “down”. Guess he saw the trajectory of his maladminstration even then.

So when does the Texas Supreme Court get the case about dress codes for school? Wouldn’t this set a precedent for Texas schools to be unable to define a dress code for their students? If they cannot mandate wearing a mask, they shouldn’t be able, by the same principle, mandate uniforms or shorts/skirts lengths or covered shoulders or waistbands showing underwear or any one of a number of things that school boards and administrations send kids (mostly girls) home for every school day.

Right wing Christians weren’t always opposed to wearing masks.

Mr. Peabody, set the wayback machine to July 1983:

You see, they encouraged each other to wear them to protect against AIDS, a disease which is not even airborne.

So they thought masks were a great idea when the issue was a non-airborne disease, but doing so in the 1980s was a way to act out and permision to torment and hate the gay people.

Now, when confronted with an actual airborne pandemic, where masks will save lives… well that’s a bridge too far for these “pro-life” frauds and bigoted dumb dumbs.

What the hell is going to happen when all the unmasked kids get and give Covid to their iclassmates and families? Another year without in class instruction? This mandate fight is just nuts.

A lots of kids, and their families (because the kids will carry the virus home with them) will get sick and die because of foolishly stupid people who think masks are bad.
Masks
Not an infringement on freedom
Not restricting oxygen
Not a political statement
Masks stop the spread of covid and also the flu. Is that a bad thing?
