Tennessee State Rep. Gloria Johnson of Knoxville (D) — a member of the trio dubbed the “Tennessee Three” — announced an official 2024 bid for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.
Among the many reasons she is to be despised:
It’ll be a worthy challenge, but this being Tennessee…does Johnson have a puncher’s chance?
She doesn’t have a chance … but she is the best candidate to advertise Democratic values across the state. She’s plain-spoken and down-to-earth and far from any label that Blackburn could sling at her.
Don’t compare her to the great lady Aughra, she’d turn Blackburn into one of these things!
Having an Evil twin isn’t the other twin’s fault.
Gloria has the best chance anyone in Tennessee could have.
She’s a stellar campaigner, a gifted debater, and if we organize and give her enough money, she can beat Marsha like a rented mule.
I question if being the best, and superb in every way matters in a state with a heavy lean right.
Republicans will vote for anyone with an “R” following their name.
Look at Herchel Walker. He was everything Republicans purport to hate. They had no trouble voting for him.
What can Marsha do to lose that base? I’d guess nothing.
I think today’s GOP wouldn’t have flinched at Todd Akin and worked legitimize his comments.
Seems we’d need a lot of non-voters to get up off the deck and register to pull this off… Has the Tennessee legislature jumped the racist shark so much to wake them?
I surely hope so, and we should, at the least make the play for it…
I’d love to see Obama and the Tennessee 3 at least work on making repubs at least sweat it…
Some of the good folks in Alabama managed to elect Doug Jones, D. It can be done. I know I live in another state, but what can I do to help.

Doug Jones barely won a special election against a child molester, and then he got thumped bad in the next general election by the guy who now holds the title of Dumbest Man in the Senate.
Trump won Alabama by 26 points in 2020. He won Tennessee by 23.
Yeah, hard to invest with those odds.
I’ll surely invest in the Sure thing like CA senate to swing hard for the left field home run. Few States afford the electorate that can support a lefty like Porter.
That said a few Bucks to Tennessee is like buying a powerball ticket, at least I played…

Tennessee isn’t as bad as Alabama.

And since the population is just over 50% women, the party split is pretty even.
The problem is always GOTV related, and the Democratic party is seriously under-organized, although that is changing even as I type.
Marsha isn’t really very popular, and 2024 is her first shot at re-election.
She hasn’t had a town hall since she won the Senate seat, and people don’t like being taken for granted.
Gloria walks neighborhoods, holds town halls and meet-and-greets, never pussyfoots about her positions, and if Marsha is dumb enough to debate her (and Marsha is just that dumb) Gloria will wipe the floor with Marsha’s rat’s nest of a hair-don’t.
Gloria may lose, but it won’t be by much and it sure won’t be from lack of trying.
Republicans got the MA senate seat for two years… events can unfold in unexpected ways.
We can’t win if we don’t have a player on the field…

Quality candidates help shift electorates, even when they don’t win. Beto did incredible work in 2018 that may well pay off for Colin Allred next year.
I believe that’s among those who register for party affiliation, so it excludes all the indies. According to Pew, the broader split looks like this:
I hope the famous Tennessean Taylor Swift makes a comment and endorsement of Johnson in the senate race. Back in 2018 she clearly stated that she was no fan of Blackburn and her policies.
A celebrity endorsement like hers might work on the margins with say suburban women. “Oh she’s a nice person, I’m a fan and my daughters like her”. “Really good to her staffers and those hard working truck drivers too”.
“Marsha just seems so nasty and negative and doesn’t care about people like me”.
Also the more liberal Music city Nashville musicians are clearly not enamored with her.
