Former Obama National Security Adviser Susan Rice challenged those who have suggested she isn’t a qualified pick for vice president, saying Tuesday that her career has been dedicated to public service over personal political ambition.
I admire Rice as much as anyone. Also, I see two issues:
She’s never run a campaign.
She has an anti-choice, “Trump-loving Republican” son, whom the GOP would mercilessly exploit against her on a Biden ticket.
She’s smart, capable, and a natural for SoS, but there are plenty of smart and capable alternatives who are less “target rich”.
(And I get that Republicans will exploit anything about anybody – but we need to exercise the most due diligence possible to end this dystopian nightmare.)
I heard an interview with her on NPR this morning, it was impressive. She was asked about her lack of campaign experience, and said that while she hadn’t campaigned for herself, she has campaigned for others. Also made the point that this will be a very different campaign due to the pandemic, primarily online and not big rallies.
She also said something interesting about her kids (in their 20’s I think) – that her son is very conservative and her daughter is very progressive. She said she has discussions with her son, and while they disagree on things like abortion rights, they can agree on other things. Making a case for finding points of agreement with the other side.
Maybe not what us progressives want to hear, and not what will actually happen once Biden wins, because there will be zero cooperation from R’s. But it could be a good talking point in the general election.
All good points, but I see her history of working with Joe in the Obama administration as a huge “trust” factor. She would also have experience in dealing with our former overseas allies that Fat Nixon totally alienated. I also don’t see her running for POTUS on the day she becomes VP.
I really admire Harris, but her attacks on Biden in the debates may have left a scar.
I’m not sure there is much leverage there. She’s been very open about disagreements with her son. She says they still love each other even though they disagree, which could be a powerful message for people who are fed up with how “divisive” the country has become under Trump.
The Biden team does have to make sure her son wouldn’t willingly cooperate with attacks. She didn’t sound worried about that in the interview I heard, but then she wasn’t asked about it directly.
We should compare Susan Rice’s qualifications to handle the Trump/Pencedemic with the guy Trump put in charge of the response, Mike “I don’t believe in evolution, climate change and science” Pence. That is the hypocrisy of Republicans saying Rice is not qualified could only be matched if the Republicans were demanding to see Joe Biden’s taxes.
It’s sad if that were to be the reason Rice is ruled out. I don’t know how I would feel in her situation as my sons are both liberals, but there were some more extreme social and political stances they endorsed in college that I questioned. My niece went to school with the Bush twins, and it was common knowledge that there were law enforcement personnel assigned to get them out of the bars “quietly” on Friday and Saturday nights before they got so drunk that things got ugly - and public. They turned out to be decent young women.
I admire Rice as well, and she may be the smartest of the bunch. That first issue - never having run a campaign - is big, though, and risky.
To those who endorse her with the reason “She’s not a politician,” you must mean like Harry Truman, Abe Lincoln, or Franklin Roosevelt - all of whom were proud to be politicians. This American disease of making “politician” a pejorative is most unhelpful. The other Western democracies don’t have this problem. I want a VP who is a good politician. It’s how you win elections and get things done.
Or it could be, “Unless your son has a significant learning or other mental disability, your failure to raise him as a decent person in what way prepares you to be a parent to an entire nation?”
I like Rice. She exudes an air of competence that is very refreshing. If she isn’t VP she is my first choice for SOS. That department is going to need a major rebuild after Trump.
“Former Obama National Security Adviser Susan Rice challenged those who have suggested she isn’t a qualified pick for vice president, saying Tuesday ‘Are you effing kidding me? The bar is on the floor, people! You are saying I’m less qualified than Mike Pence, a gay-hating animatronic robot who escaped off a Chuck E. Cheese stage! What the eff is wrong with you?!’”
Nah, that doesn’t work on any parent who has raised a kid into adulthood, and knows that you don’t have perfect control over how they turn out. Especially in today’s social media environment. I don’t think that line of attack would stick.
