It should be troubling to GOPers that their “heroes” in these times are not people that do active battle with Trump, or perform other feats meant to undermine or stymie his policies. They achieve some sort of notoriety or credit merely because they quit. Corker, Flake, Jolly, et al just throw in the towel and walk away. And in the Republican world that constitutes rebelling against Trump. Pathetic.

The only option Bolton had to avoid testimony was a gamble. If he said yes to the House proceedings he’d damn sure have to talk. But the Senate was a 50 / 50. If they didn’t call witnesses, something they said would be the case, he’d be off the hook and have the excuse he used yesterday. He had nothing to lose given his other options.
He did not want to testify.
He did not want to admit that.
So he played both those ends against the middle and came out. Now he can sell a book sans the spoiler testimony would have created.
