Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has been on a mission lately to “rebrand” herself as a serious politician. The MAGA-aligned conspiracy theorist congresswoman has spent the last few weeks trying very hard to lean into what looks like a new public image where she is no longer the famously far-right member of Congress – who won her first bid in 2020 on the back of her QAnon beliefs – but instead the number one ally to Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and other moderate Republicans.
Senator Moynihan was quite prescient when he said that we were “defining deviancy down”. JFC the woman actually called for the murder of her fellow congress members. He never thought that there would be a prime example of it in the House of Representatives.
Greene was one of the few conservatives who supported Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) speakership bid through the 15-round, very public days-long fight.
I hate to nitpick, but I really object to using “conservative” to refer specifically to the far-right. Kevin McCarthy is no moderate, and neither is any GOP congressperson I can think of. They’re all conservatives. MTG is a radical or an extremist and we should call her that.
Please, please, please lose the term “moderate Republican” from your writing particularly when you include McCarthy. There is nothing moderate about the GOP members of the 118th Congress.
