Supreme Court Upholds Ban On Curbside Voting In Alabama | Talking Points Memo

Did we expect the corporate propaganda rag that joyously lied us into a war that killed my son to actually stand up to Trump?

Oh they may smack him around a bit with a velvet glove but Trump is their cash cow. He keeps the money flowing into the corporate propaganda rag whose motto is “All The Propaganda Wall Street Tells Us To Print!”.

The check just might be people losing all faith in the courts and either refusing to sit on juries or engage in massive jury nullification.

The first order of business in responding should be to adopt a proper phrase rather than repeating, and thereby reinforcing, the GOP trope of “court packing.”

In a letter to the editor I pointed out that from 1792 to 1866 the number of Justices had been set to match the number of Federal Circuit Courts. That ended when Congress established the 10th Circuit Court in 1929. It’s time for Congress to honor the original intent of the founders and increase the Court to 13 seats to match the number of Circuit Courts.

Nominating and confirming Justices who don’t legislate from the bench? What is the Constitutional issue that gives the U.S. Supreme Court jurisdiction over the actions of the state in this case?

Let’s see if we can make a big enough noise to end the Republican party not just nationally but in Alabama. Shaking your fist at the sky doesn’t get it done. People should be pointing out voter suppression everywhere all the time. Make Republicans pay for their bad faith.

Hope they enjoy the taste of minority rule while sealing their own damn fate. Biden will have the backing of the people to reform SCOTUS in a search for balance and fairness.

I talked to my very progressive US Rep last year about expanding the Supreme Court. He was not in favor of expansion because of the possibility that it would become a never ending cycle. He’s rethinking his position.

What is the actual problem with curbside voting? We have it where I live here in Southern California and its just not a problem. Other places have it too. So whats the problem?

Really, the only answer is that it makes it easier to vote, and they don’t want that. Republicans don’t want people to vote. Period. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

End. Game.

You see it every day. Idiots can’t parallel park, end up scratching their wheels on it.

And when you’ve got $2k chrome rims on your micropenis truck, those scrapes look horrid.

None needed. The Constitution says whatever the court says it says. Only practical remedy would be for the military to step in and fix the banana.

I don’t know. Eat pizza, have nightmares, wake up in a panic. It’s late October 2020.

The state argued that it’s too late to implement it (now) without causing chaos.

I really hope that some org in WI and AL, hell any place where the state courts and SC Justices that are preventing reasonable accommodations to voters to vote in the time of a pandemic.
The only comparable scenarios that are more absurd than the one we find our selves in is if someone’s polling place in the path of a wildfire, and yet they refuse to move it until such time as the flames reach a mile away. Or that a fucking sniper is picking off voters going to in person voting because they couldn’t figure out how to satisfy all the requirements of absentee voting, or mail in voting.
I know that what I described is outrageous, but it seems to me that the courts, judges, and some state’s election officials are insisting that the letter of the law is more important then a voter’s life.

Well I guess we’ll see how a handmaiden justifies her “sincerely held religious beliefs” vs the law and legal precedent.

I know, I know. And that very specific argument has merit, but…
if curbside voting was a normal part of their voting toolbox, IT WOULDN’T HAVE TO BE ADDED AT THE LAST MINUTE!!!

(Not shouting at YOU per se, just frustrated at the whole repressing the vote effort)

He better as just about any and all progressive legislation (voting rights, healthcare, even a proper COVID-19 response) will not survive this court intact.

Just as opposing eliminating the filibuster is basically the same as opposing progressive policy, opposing expanding the courts (or equivalent judicial reform) is the same as opposing progressive policy.

or that a contrived election outcome is more important than both the letter and spirit of the law.

It has some merit, yes – until we ask why the state has waited to be sued before even trying to implement the measure.

Or in your words:

Along the same lines, we can ask the state to detail its perfect, chaos-free plan to provide this reasonable accommodation … in the fullness of time.

Understood – but sometimes I don’t hear too well, so shouting may be needed.

And don’t forget, we are talking about Alabama after all ! :joy:

Looks like Roberts reverted to form when it comes to suppressing the vote.
